THE POSITION: The National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Maryland, the world’s premiere biomedical research institution, is seeking applications from exceptional candidates for the exciting position of Deputy Director, National Institute of Environmental of Health Sciences (NIEHS) in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina. The mission of NIEHS is to discover how the environment affects people in order to promote healthier lives. In addition to its core NIH research mission, NIEHS hosts and administers the National Toxicology Program (NTP), an interagency program of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). The NTP conducts and coordinates toxicological testing, develops innovative research tools and strategies, and publishes the HHS Report on Carcinogens. NTP is a coordinated effort among HHS components and works in collaboration with other federal agencies including the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of Defense and the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
The Deputy Director, NIEHS serves as the second-in-command for the Institute, assisting the Director, NIEHS with managing a staff of approximately 662 approved FTEs and approximately 500 non-FTE scientists, contractors, and other professionals and support staff with a budget of $890 million. He/she is primarily responsible for assisting the Director, NIEHS in providing overall scientific and administrative leadership to the Institute. Serves, in the absence of the Director, as the Institute’s principal leader and primary spokesperson for the NIEHS’ mission and programs. In conjunction with the Director, oversees all aspects of the annual program of research, training, and education conducted and supported by the Institute. Provides expert advice and counsel to the Director on advancing progress in environmental health science through strategic planning; opportunities for national research capacity building; development and coordination of agreements within the HHS/NIH and globally; advancement of intramural science; and national and international research and training initiatives. With the Director, leads NIEHS program and initiative planning and evaluation. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: NIEHS seeks candidates who have a commitment to scientific excellence and the energy, enthusiasm, and innovative thinking necessary to lead a dynamic and diverse organization. Applicants must possess an M.D., Ph.D., or equivalent doctoral degree in a relevant discipline and have senior-level research experience and knowledge of research programs in one or more scientific areas related to environmental health science research including the importance of high standards for rigor and reproducibility. The incumbent must possess in-depth knowledge and personal research experience in one or more of NIEHS’ research areas. The scientific implications of the research programs will benefit from experience and knowledge of federal research grants administration. They should be known and respected within their discipline, both nationally and internationally, as individuals of outstanding scientific competence. Applicants also must have demonstrated experience in setting, planning, implementing, and analyzing program objectives and priorities. Candidates should have demonstrated ability to manage financial and human resources and coordinate a research portfolio involving extensive internal and external collaboration.
SALARY/BENEFITS: The Deputy Director, NIEHS will be appointed at a salary commensurate with his/her qualifications and experience. Full Federal benefits will be provided, including retirement, health and life insurance, long term care insurance, leave and savings plan (401K equivalent).
