We have an exciting opportunity within our Global Medical Affairs team for a Director, Medical Affairs within Oncology. This role will be office-based in our headquarters in Foster City, CA.

Executive Director, Medical Affairs- Global Medical Affairs - Oncology

Reporting to the Vice President and Global Head of Medical Affairs-Oncology, the Executive Director position for Global Medical Affairs, Oncology is the subject matter expert responsible for providing medical support to the development of the Global Oncology Medical Affairs strategic and tactical plans in collaboration with the Global Oncology Medical Head. The Executive Director Medical Affairs - Global Oncology will support the global launch planning and execution for novel pipeline oncology products, across multiple tumor types and treatment settings and support the affiliates with key strategic guidance and tactical excellence.

Job Responsibilities

As an integral part of the Global Oncology Medical Affairs Team, and in close collaboration with the Global Development team and cross-functional partners, the Executive Director Medical Affairs - Oncology will establish and maintain the tenor of Gilead's scientific communications with the HCP, Research and Patient Communities around the world. This individual will provide frequent internal and external input into the development Global Oncology Medical Affairs Strategic Plans.

The Executive Director Medical Affairs position will advise on the development of Medical Education, Phase IV, and publication/communication strategies based on global insights, strategy and objectives. He/She will also co-lead the development of data generation and life cycle management initiatives, as well as support the learning and development of internal stakeholders. Specific responsibilities for this role will include but are not limited to:

  • Leading the development of the Global Integrated Strategic Plan and Global Plan of Action for medical affairs in oncologic diseases
  • Authors Phase IV & ISR strategy and ensuring execution of evidence generation plans (clinical and economic) with an understanding of unmet medical needs
  • Leading the execution of the Global Plan of Action, including patient engagement planning, advisory board planning, data generation efforts, and the execution of projects (including a focus on digital approaches) that will provide more extensive background or answers to questions in response to issues that arise relative to commercial, educational or data needs
  • Preparing and giving presentations for internal training
  • Leads the delivery of timely, accurate and succinct communication of fair-balanced and scientific presentations to health care professionals, both proactively and reactively in response to requests for information, consistent with promotional compliance and regulatory requirements.
  • Serving as a medical and content expert for internal stakeholders
  • Representing Gilead at key medical conferences and congresses
  • Providing Global support for key cross-functional launch and post-launch activities
  • Participating in the review and approval of investigator-initiated studies
  • Collaborates effectively and in a compliant manner with colleagues in other functional areas across Gilead and cross functionally with Kite.
  • Acts as a patient advocate to ensure the successful delivery of therapy, will respond to call center to triage matters as required.
  • Drive the synthesis and transition of complex scientific data/clinical situations into strategy and solutions to optimize access and care for patients
  • Act as a guardian for high standards of compliance, ethic and safety


Requirements:
  • Advanced degree (i.e. PhD, MD, DO or Pharm D)
  • Significant clinical, research or medical communication background in oncology (solid tumor or hematologic malignancies).
  • Hematology experience strongly preferred
  • Industry experience (7+ years), ideally including recent experience of a successful launch within Oncology or Hematology
  • An ability to think medically and strategically about the short- and long-term impacts within the oncology health care global landscape
  • An ability to lead collaboratively across various internal stakeholders, to inspire others and develop trusted partnerships, with a preference for prior supervisory/leadership experience
  • A strong ability to interpret and articulate clinical data and the oncology clinical development programs
  • Demonstrated organizational skills to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills (including presentation skills) along with excellent judgment and ability to work in a matrix team environment
  • Demonstrated evidence of successfully achieving results
  • Prior management experience preferred
  • Computer proficiency in MS Office and Adobe
  • Ability to travel frequently (+/- 30%)
