The UC Davis College of Biological Sciences announces an Assistant Professor faculty position in marine ecology within the Department of Evolution and Ecology to be based at the Bodega Marine Laboratory (BML).  Applications are encouraged from candidates with a strong background in any current or emerging area that will complement and build upon existing faculty strengths in marine ecology, including but not limited to community ecology, algal and/or seagrass ecology, global change ecology, physiological ecology, evolutionary ecology, and the ecology of large-scale phenomena.  We seek a candidate who does empirical work that includes a field component.

The successful candidate will be based at Bodega Marine Laboratory (https://marinescience.ucdavis.edu/bml), located 100 miles west of the main UC Davis campus.  BML is part of the Coastal and Marine Sciences Institute (CMSI), a comprehensive unit at UC Davis that seeks to coordinate and catalyze research, education, and outreach in marine science.  This position is part of a hiring initiative at BML, and is being coordinated with two other positions, one in marine environmental toxicology, the other in sustainable aquaculture.  The appointee will join a community of collaborative, interdisciplinary researchers at BML with interests including marine ecology, physical and biological oceanography, paleoceanography, biogeochemistry, ecotoxicology, biomechanics, global change biology, ocean health, and marine conservation. To learn more, please explore the websites for the College of Biological Sciences (https://biology.ucdavis.edu), the Department of Evolution and Ecology (https://eve.ucdavis.edu), and the Coastal and Marine Sciences Institute (https://marinescience.ucdavis.edu).  Please contact the search committee chair, Dr. Eric Sanford (email: edsanford@ucdavis.edu), for additional inquiries.

As one of the country’s leading R1 institutions, UC Davis seeks candidates with the potential for research, teaching, and inclusive excellence. In addition, the successful candidate will demonstrate an understanding of the barriers preventing full participation of members from historically underrepresented and marginalized student communities in higher education, such as (but not limited to) women, underrepresented minorities, individuals self-identifying as LGBTQIA+, veterans, individuals with disabilities, economically disadvantaged groups, first-generation, undocumented students, or students with any intersections in between. The successful candidate will have an accomplished track record (calibrated to career stage) of teaching, research, or service activities addressing the needs of underrepresented minorities, and a clearly articulated vision of how their work at UC Davis will continue to contribute to the University’s mission of serving the needs of our diverse state and student population. Applicants’ track record of engagement and activity related to diversity, equal opportunity, and inclusion as well as their plans for future engagement will be a significant part of the overall evaluation of the candidate’s qualifications for a faculty appointment.

Minimum Qualifications

• A Ph.D. (or equivalent) at the time of appointment in the biological sciences, ecology, marine sciences, or a related field.

• Demonstrated research accomplishments via publishing marine ecology research in peer reviewed journals.

Preferred Qualifications

We desire applicants who have identified strengths and experiences in the following areas:

•  Research interests in marine ecology that complement or extend existing research strengths in the Department of Evolution and Ecology and at Bodega Marine Laboratory, and the potential to attract extramural funding.

•  Postdoctoral training in marine ecology or a related discipline.

•  Evidence of, or strong potential for, commitment to the advancement of diversity, equity, and inclusion for historically underrepresented and marginalized student communities, and how this commitment integrates with teaching, research, and service.

•  Commitment to excellence in teaching. Must demonstrate potential or evidence of ability to perform well at both graduate and undergraduate levels and to develop and teach undergraduate and graduate courses or seminars.

•  Commitment to participating in BML/CMSI, departmental, and college communities through collaborative research, teaching, and service.

Appointment will be as an academic year (9-month) tenure-track Assistant Professor. Participation in department, college, and university service as a member of UC Davis Division of the Academic Senate is an expectation under our faculty shared governance model.
