Summary

Function:

Designs, develops and implements computational and genomic experiments

Scope:

Performs analyses and impacts the management, planning, development and implementation of a research program in computational and statistical genomics and population science.

Key Functions

Research Management Works closely with Principal Investigator/ Program Director (PI/PD) on overall research program. Initiates research projects and provides intellectual and technical solutions through administration of own skills or through assigning tasks to other lab members. Manages projects and may supervise some research staff. Determines specific goals or objectives for projects, evaluates research data and develops and revises techniques or approaches to work. This might include the following: secondary supervision to pre-doctoral students, post-doctoral fellows and other junior research personnel; design of algorithms and software; organizing and directing lab meetings in the absence of the PI/PD. Project types may include analysis of next-generation sequencing of DNA or RNA from humans, model organisms, or cell lines/ organoids, requiring data integration and creative design/implementation of computational workflows. Expertise in the following fields will support various research projects: human genetics, genomics, and computational cancer biology. Projects will span observational science -- including cancer risk, early detection and cancer patient data and outcomes -- for cancer prevention and treatment of early-stage disease.

The successful candidate may also apply for grants as a principal investigator with institutional approval.

Laboratory Research Exercises initiative in planning or executing details of experiments and in evaluating and interpreting results. Coordinates interactions / collaborations between computational and wet lab personnel.

Research Collaborations Collaborates with or assists supervisor with preparation of reports and grant submissions. Drafts or supports writing for publication of results in peer-reviewed journals. Develops and coordinates collaborations. Represents PI/PD at local, collaborative meetings. Reviews and evaluates research activity and data of the research team.

Other duties as assigned.

Education

Required:

Ph.D. in one of the natural sciences or related field.

Preferred:

PhD in a quantitative field, such as Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Quantitative Sciences, Human or Molecular Genetics, Computer Science, or related field in natural sciences.

Experience

Required:

Five years of experience in scientific or experimental research work.

Preferred:

Experience that includes project management and computation.
