TITLE: Sheldon J. Segal Post-Doctoral Fellowship

REPORTING TO: Senior Scientist, Kumar Lab, Reproductive Health Program

LOCATION: Center for Biomedical Research, New York, NY

JOBS SUPERVISED: Not Applicable

ASSIGNMENT LENGTH: Two-years, renewal yearly by mutual consent and availability of funds

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Population Council confronts critical health and development issues – from stopping the spread of HIV to improving reproductive health and ensuring that young people lead full and productive lives. Through biomedical, social science and public health research in 50 countries, we work with our partners to deliver solutions that lead to more effective policies, programs and technologies that improve lives around the world.  The goal of the Center for Biomedical Research (CBR) is to develop novel sexual and reproductive health technologies, including contraceptives and multipurpose prevention technologies that will ultimately receive approval by stringent regulatory authorities.

The Post-doctoral position is available in our Reproductive Health (RH) laboratory to identify and investigate nonsteroidal and steroidal targets for both male and female contraception in animal models. The research may also involve preclinical evaluation of candidate new chemical entities (NCEs) with a focus on developing new non-hormonal and hormonal contraceptives. The fellow will collaborate with researchers in the other biomedical laboratories (Prevention of HIV & Sexually Transmitted Infections) at the Council to advance research in new contraceptive multipurpose prevention technologies (cMPT). The Population Council laboratories are located on the Rockefeller University campus, through which there is access to numerous additional state-of-the-art facilities.  The Council seeks candidates who may be interested in full-time positions at the conclusion of their fellowship(s).  The laboratory has been involved in testing a wide range of products for sexual and reproductive health, including FDA-approved products.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Ph.D., M.D. or MD/PhD

2. Experience in animal research models for contraception and pharmacology & toxicology investigations.

3. Experience in handling of rodents and rabbits for blood collection and drug administration for efficacy, pharmacokinetics and safety.

4. Experience in cell culture and molecular biology techniques.

5. Highly motivated, excellent attention to detail, with the ability to work independently and within a group as needed. Demonstrated ability to monitor and maintain project timelines.

6. Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.

TERMS:

Fellowships include a monthly stipend (starting at $5,179.25/month, commensurate with experience) to cover cost of living expenses, health insurance and relocation assistance.  Fellows will be provided with office space and use of a computer.

TO APPLY:

Please include a brief description of your academic and professional qualifications and goals, a short statement about your research interests and a copy of your CV.
