Faculty Position in Oral Microbiology

The Abigail Wexner Research Institute (AWRI) at Nationwide Children’s Hospital seeks outstanding faculty candidates for recruitment to the assistant, associate or full professor rank with a laboratory-based focus in oral microbiology. Particular areas of research interest include, but are not limited to, studies of cariology, periodontitis, microbial communities in healthy and dysbiotic hosts. Expertise in metabolomics, genomics, biochemistry, probiotic microbiology, mucosal immunology or host-pathogen interaction is desirable.

The mission of the Center for Microbial Pathogenesis is to transform the approaches and outcomes of children, adolescents, and young adults who suffer from infectious disease through research and clinical translation.

The new faculty member will be expected to be an active participant in advancing this mission by establishing an impactful independent research program supported by extramural funding, developing basic and translational scientific collaborations, providing mentorship to colleagues, training the next generation of researchers, and participating in center activities.  In addition, they would also be part of the Oral and GI Research Affinity Group, a university wide group that brings together like minded clinicians and basic scientists that are actively involved in research in oral and gastrointestinal microbiology as it affects human disease. As a member of the Oral GI Microbiology Research Affinity Group, the new faculty member will help develop strong ties to the clinical Division of Pediatric Dentistry of The Ohio State University College of Dentistry.

The successful candidate should have an MD, MD/PhD, DDS/PhD, PhD, or equivalent degree, and will have a strong prior track record for publication and grant-funding.

The Research Institute is ranked sixth nationally in NIH funding to free-standing children’s hospitals. Research programs are organized into thirteen multidisciplinary Centers of Emphasis structured to encourage collaboration, facilitate team science and foster creativity.

The Center for Microbial Pathogenesis is actively expanding from its current complement of twelve principal investigators with a strong history of NIH funding and technology development. PI’s are faculty members at The Ohio State University College of Medicine, and most are members of The Ohio State University Infectious Disease Institute, which involves 220 faculty across 13 internationally recognized colleges at Ohio State University and AWRI.  Many PI’s also find productive working groups within the IDI’s Program Areas, including the Center of Microbiome Sciences and the Biofilms in Human Medicine Interest Group, and hold appointments in graduate programs across the university. 

Ranked eighth on the 2020-2021 U.S. News & World Report’s “America’s Best Children’s Hospitals Honor Roll,” Nationwide Children’s Hospital is one of the nation’s largest not-for-profit freestanding pediatric health care networks providing wellness, preventive, diagnostic, treatment and rehabilitative care for infants, children and adolescents, as well as adult patients with congenital disease.
