Tenure Track Assistant Professor or Associate Professor in Clinical Forensic Medicine

The Department of Forensic Medicine at Faculty of Health at Aarhus University invites applications for a position as either Tenure Track Assistant Professor or Associate Professor in the field of clinical forensic medicine as per 1 March 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The position as tenure track assistant professor is a fixed-term full-time position with a view to permanent employment as an associate professor. The position as associate professor is a permanent full-time position.

As a tenure track assistant professor or associate professor at the Department of Forensic Medicine, you will be a part of the Faculty of Health at Aarhus University. The department employs 70 employees, of which 35 have an academic background, while eight are tenured academic staff. Our mission is to contribute to the prevention of crime, accidents, premature deaths and suicides through research, education and forensic investigations. As an employee at the department, we expect that you contribute to achieving this goal.

The department comprises two sections providing commissioned work for the Danish National Police. The Section of Forensic Pathology and Clinical Forensic Medicine performs autopsies, crime scene investigations and clinical forensic examinations. The section hold an ISO 17020 quality standard accreditation.

The department also has three research units, which focus on bioanalytical chemistry, forensic imaging and clinical forensic medicine. You can read more about the research at our department here and about the faculty here.

Clinical forensic medicine is a comprehensive research area and may be addressed in several ways, i.e. through traumatology, epidemiology, psychology, paediatrics, general medicine or public health perspectives. You will have access to excellent research facilities and a unique data material from the clinical forensic examinations performed at our own department or one of our collaborators at Aarhus University Hospital – Centre for rape and sexual assault victims, or Centre for abused children. You will be introduced to networks including forensic clinical physicians and researchers from across the faculty of health, working with related research topics. 

Your job responsibilities
Your primary tasks will be research within the field of clinical forensic medicine, supervision of students and a limited amount of research-based teaching. You must be an ambitious researcher with original and long-term research visions. In your daily work, you will work closely with our clinical forensic staff, health professionals and other researchers. You are expected to build a research group mainly financed from external sources. Aarhus University offers professional and administrative support to applications for external funding from e.g. EU, and national public and private funding agencies. Your main tasks will consist of:

• Independent research of the highest international quality, including publication.
• Supervision, guidance and teaching of undergraduate students and PhD students.
• Collaborate with relevant national and international research environments.
• Attracting external research funding.

Your competences

• You have a background within forensic medicine, psychology, public health, epidemiology, gynaecology, anthropology or another relevant area of medicine or health science.
• You have independent research-related qualifications at a high international level.
• You are experienced with data handling, processing and analysis.
• You are a clear communicator and you have some degree of experience of supervision and teaching at Bachelor’s and Master's degree level and potential of becoming a successful group leader. Completed pedagogical courses in supervision or similar will be a plus, as will experience with the establishment of PhD courses and external research collaborations.
• You have completed one or more productive stays at a university abroad.
• As a person, you have good interpersonal skills, are friendly and helpful and able to contribute to a good work environment.
• We expect you to be fluent in oral and written English. International applicants are expected to learn Danish, and Aarhus University arranges Danish teaching.

Terms of employment

• Appointment as assistant professor requires academic qualifications at PhD level.
• Appointment as an associate professor requires research and teaching qualifications at the level that can be achieved through the satisfactory completion of a period of appointment as an assistant professor, but may also be obtained in other ways. The applicant is required to have completed a university pedagogical programme or an equivalent programme
