Department of Biology

The Biology Program at CSU Dominguez Hills is designed to provide students with intensive, progressive, and balanced learning experiences in cell and molecular biology, organismal biology, population and community biology, and environmental science. In Fall 2020, the biology department moved into the new Science and Innovation building. This building provides new facilities, such as an instructional museum, for innovative teaching practices, and will house equipment for computational and molecular work, including an Illumina MiSeq.

Our students have excelled as they pursue diverse career tracks. Our pre-health students have been admitted to top graduate programs in medicine, dentistry, and veterinary science. Students interested in research have presented at regional and national conferences as undergraduates, attended summer research programs, and matriculated to Ph.D. programs at R1 universities nationwide. Students interested in teaching have received numerous fellowships and scholarships supporting their undergraduate & graduate education and teaching credential.

Many faculty in the biology department are using evidence-based teaching practices including active learning, flipped classrooms, and team-based approaches. CSUDH has multiple specially-designed classrooms to facilitate these activities. The typical class size allows for individualized interactions and active discussions, and we encourage authentic research projects as part of the classroom experience. There is active collaboration with the Center for Innovation in STEM Education (CISE) to innovate K-16 education.
