Description

The Climate Policy Lab at The Fletcher School, Tufts University, seeks a postdoctoral scholar to work on the environmental dimensions of Chinese overseas investment through the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). The Climate Policy Lab has been studying the BRI with a particular focus on its role in promoting energy-related investments in developing countries. We encourage candidates to propose a research topic that they would like to study. We invite proposals on any topic within the overarching theme of evaluating the climate and environmental impact of BRI investments.

Qualifications

Doctorate is required, and applicants must have received their Ph.D. degree within the last five years. Candidates should be experienced in conducting field research in developing countries and have demonstrated research experience in case study and survey interview methodology. The scholar will be expected to conduct online interviews. Once university regulations allow in-person interviews and travel, candidates must be willing to travel and spend time in case study countries. Candidates with demonstrated research experience in process tracing methods preferred. Applications will be accepted from all disciplines as the Climate Policy Lab is committed to interdisciplinary research. Candidates must, however, display a strong interest in BRI and energy/environmental/climate issues. Fluency in English is required. If the candidate proposes to conduct research in China, proficiency in Chinese will be required. For topics pertaining to host countries of the BRI, proficiency in the relevant local languages is preferred. Applicants should be experienced in conducting independent, self-directed research, and will be expected to ensure the deliverables required by the project are produced on time.

The postdoctoral scholar will participate in the Climate Policy Lab’s monthly seminar series and weekly group meetings, and will mentor more junior members of the group. Expected outputs include 1–2 publishable academic papers, a discussion paper to be published by the Climate Policy Lab, and at least one blog post. The postdoctoral scholar is also expected to help brief research results to funders, policy makers, and other stakeholders. Additionally, the scholar will need to be flexible in contributing to other projects of the Climate Policy Lab as required.

The postdoctoral scholar appointment is for one year, renewable for a second year at the discretion of the director. The salary for this position is $55,000 and includes health benefits.
