We seek an individual who will develop computational tools for visualizing the structure and connectivity of the nervous system of an animal. The animal is one of today's most important research models, the nematode worm Caenorhabditis elegans. This laboratory has recently published the connectomes of both C. elegans sexes (Cook et al., Nature 571, 63-71, 2019). These are the first wiring diagrams of entire nervous systems, valuable tools for exploration of nervous system function and development. Current work is directed towards generating volumetric descriptions of the neurons. In order to exploit this new data and make it available for further research and education, we wish to develop visualization tools for computer assisted exploration of the nervous systems' structure and connectivity.
The computer programmer will use available images of the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans and new data that may be obtained to construct a “3D worm,” a computer application that will allow the user to zoom into the worm's body, visualize and identify neurons and other cells and tissues, and navigate through the nervous system, following the neuron tracts and identifying synaptic connections. Constructing such a virtual worm will require solving the problem of fitting data from different individual animals to a canonical worm described by a common coordinate framework. The programmer will develop this visualization application to be available on a website.

Bachelors degree in quantitative science plus 3 years related experience. Recent graduates with outstanding academic backgrounds will also be considered.

- Experience with XML, JSON, REST APIs

- Experience with software engineering best practices (unit testing, version control)
