About the Position:

The Department of Health Sciences invites applications from qualified candidates for a preliminary appointment (tenure-track) in Health Sciences at the rank of Assistant Professor. The position is expected to start July 1, 2021; however, the start date is negotiable.

We are looking for outstanding applicants with the capacity to develop an independent, vigorous and innovative research program using approaches that may include advanced functional omics technologies, bioinformatics, animal models of human health and disease and/or human cohorts and high-throughput screening. Candidates should work at the forefront of the intersection of microbiology, immunology, and metabolism research as it relates to human health. Appropriate areas of research include inflammation and infection, microbiome, metabolic stress or how immunotherapies or vaccine development relate to these.

About the Academic Unit:

The Bachelors of Health Sciences (BHSc), housed within the Department of Health Sciences, offers opportunities in this area of growth and strategic importance at Carleton. This is an interdisciplinary program that leverages the expertise of multiple disciplines, from biomedical to environmental to social determinants of health, health policy, public and global health, for learning and research opportunities. For more information, please visit our website at: http://carleton.ca/healthsciences/.

Qualifications:

Applicants must have a PhD and/or MD or equivalent. The successful candidate must show proven ability or significant potential to develop an independent research program and will be expected to maintain their research program by obtaining external competitive grants (e.g. Tri-council funding). They will also be expected to teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels within their area(s) of specialization as well as in broader health-related fields. The successful applicant will therefore demonstrate excellent teaching, mentoring, and communication skills. Administrative experience would be an asset, as the candidate will be required to participate in the administrative work of the Department.

As part of an interdisciplinary department, the successful candidate’s research interests are expected to dovetail with that of the existing Faculty. Applicants with the ability to forge collaborations with members of the Department and interdisciplinary-oriented faculty across the university, as well as with allied agencies, will be given preference. The Department is building core strengths in three clusters of excellence: 1) Environment and Global Health, 2) Lifecourse Approach to Health and 3) Big Data.
