Job Summary/Basic Function:
The Scientific Writer is responsible for producing accurate, clear, and interesting content for manuscripts, grants, reports, and presentations. Applies scientific principles and biomedical knowledge to understand, organize, and describe complex data for scientific, medical, and lay audiences. Coordinates input from a multi-disciplinary team while meeting tight deadlines. Helps write and proofread key documents. Maintains familiarity with relevant research, conducts literature reviews, and manages references. Assists with the design, development, and selection of scientific illustrations, tables, and figures. Tracks manuscript status from conceptualization through publication. Identifies funding opportunities. Assists with cover letters and associated documents. Maintains common-use text describing facilities, resources, human subject sections and standard procedures. Summarizes research results for lay audiences and community stakeholders. A senior candidate may assume a leadership role for a Scientific Writing Unit, hosting scientific writing workshops, writing groups and lunch-and-learns for junior investigators and trainees.
Minimum Qualifications:
PhD in biomedical science-related field and 2 years experience writing and editing scientific publications and grants. Ability to meet tight deadlines and work independently on complex tasks. Attention to detail. Excellent communication skills. Proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. Ability to read, analyze and interpret an extensive variety of scientific, technical, financial, and legal documents. Ability to deal with several abstract and concrete variables. Ability to work with a wide array of individuals and to operate effectively in a team setting. Self-starter.

Preferred Qualifications:
MD and/or PhD in Immunology. Immunology and/or clinical rheumatology experience a plus. Previous experience with statistics and scientific and/or grant writing strongly preferred. Proficiency in EndNote and GraphPad Prism (or other data visualization programs). Data analysis and/or statistical training or expertise a plus.
Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee is frequently required to sit and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision and ability to adjust focus.
