Post-Doctoral Fellow in Clinical Computational Biology

The University of California San Diego, Department of Pediatrics is seeking a postdoctoral fellow interested in precision medicine with an emphasis on examining longitudinal clinical and genomic influences on the development, severity, and treatment response of childhood lung diseases. The work will be supervised by Dr. Kelan Tantisira, Chief of the Division of Pediatric Respiratory Diseases, but will also include interacting with a highly interdisciplinary team of researchers from UCSD and Rady Children’s Hospital.

The current position will focus on the characterization of a novel clinical pediatric lung disease cohort via longitudinal interrogation of the electronic medical record (EMR) and relevant matching biosamples through both existing and prospective sample collections. The samples will be interrogated using high throughput biology approaches to genomics and other ‘omics technologies in order to identify de novo biomarkers of disease susceptibility, severity, and drug treatment response. The overall goal for this programmatic effort is the development of generalizable approaches to personalized medicine and precision therapeutics for pediatric lung diseases. The candidate will work closely with established investigators focused on EMR technologies, high throughput biologists with expertise in pharmacogenomics and precision biomarker identification, and clinicians with expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of pediatric lung diseases. While much of the work will focus on asthma, queries into other pediatric lung diseases are anticipated. The combination of longitudinal cohort analyses and precision medicine approaches will provide a solid foundation for the transition to independent research.

QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants should have a Ph.D., Sc.D., or M.D. with a strong analytic background in one of several areas: Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Computer Science, or Biomedical Informatics. Programming proficiency is required (e.g. Java, C, C++, Python or Perl, SAS, MATLAB or R). Previous experience with analyzing electronic medical record data or in natural language processing is desired. Additional experience with analysis of genetic or genomic data is a plus. Scientific publications in a peer-reviewed journal are necessary. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential. This position is available immediately, but short delays for the appropriate candidate will be considered. UCSD is an equal opportunity employer and women and minority applicants are encouraged to apply. An interested applicant should send a cover letter describing current research interests and career goals, a current copy of your CV, and contact information for 3 references to j1alvarez@health.ucsd.edu.
