The primary purpose of the Research Assistant II position is to provide responsible technical assistance in carrying out various research projects and assistance in maintaining efficient functioning of the laboratory. Requires scientific and technical background, independent decision making, judgment and organizational skills.

KEY FUNCTIONS
• Will perform injections, irradiations and minor surgeries, and learn a major surgical technique, germ cell transplantation to the testis, in rodents. Should successfully complete training and certification by the Department of Veterinary Medicine to handle and work with live animals, in a safe and humane manner, following institutional guidelines for disposal of dead animals, biohazards and used needles. Responsible for ordering rodents and maintaining up-to-date animal inventory

• Will assist with studies on non-human primates although direct handling of the monkeys will be done by senior investigators, veterinarians, and veterinary staff. Will prepare cell suspensions by enzyme digestion from the rodent/non-human primate testicular tissue followed by cryogenic storage. Will perform short-term cultures and transfection of primary cells under sterile and healthy condition.

• Breed and maintain the colony of transgenic mice for experiments; keep up-to-date record of the breeders, birth date, and the mice available for experiments.

• Will perform molecular studies (extract DNA, RNA from cells or tissues, prepare cells for flow cytometry, perform PCR, real-time PCR).

• Will perform histological and cellular studies: Tissue processing for sectioning,
immunohistochemistry staining, immunofluorescence staining, and FACS analysis.

• Serve as Lab Representative on department Lab Council, attend all meetings and communicate all information back to lab staff.

• Maintain laboratory environment including ordering of supplies and organization of supplies and equipment

• Maintain clear and accurate records of laboratory data, both written and electronic, accessible at all times by the supervisor.

• Communicate effectively with supervisor through informal discussion on a daily basis, weekly one-on-one meeting, laboratory meetings, and department seminars.

Education

Required: Bachelor's degree with major course works in one of the basic sciences.

Experience
Required
: Two years experience in scientific or experimental research work. No experience required with preferred degree.

Preferred: Some prior experience with sterile techniques for cell culture experiments, molecular biology (e.g. nucleic acid extraction, PCR, immunohistochemistry), and handling and minor surgeries on experimental animals.
