The Calvert lab seeks an enthusiastic and motivated postdoctoral associate to study fundamental mechanisms of retinal neuron function and blinding diseases.  

Our work seeks to understand the molecular and biophysical mechanisms underlying the construction and functional compartmentalization of retinal neurons. Several projects are available to the prospective postdoc, including studying the mechanisms underlying the formation of the ciliary photoreceptor light signaling compartments, the mechanisms of protein segregation into functional compartments throughout photoreceptors and how disruption of these mechanisms leads to retinal disease. We quantify molecular dynamics in living, functioning neurons at the ensemble and single molecule levels and generate computational models to critically evaluate proposed mechanisms. A wide range of approaches are used, including high-end quantitative fluorescence microscopy and single molecule tracking in living cells, cell biology, protein biochemistry, molecular biology, electrophysiology, generation of transgenic model organisms and development of image analysis routines in MATLAB or similar language.

Required qualifications: Candidates must hold a PhD or equivalent in biochemistry, molecular biology, biophysics, or related field.

The Center for Vision Research (http://www.upstate.edu/cvr/) is the basic research arm of the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, comprising 14 faculty members leading vigorous basic and translational science programs spanning diverse disciplines, including cell biology and biophysics, electrophysiology, biochemistry, molecular biology, matrix biology and developmental biology. Research areas include retinal degeneration and regeneration, ciliopathies, wound healing, glaucoma, AMD, retinal vasculature, and retinal circuitry. Postdocs will receive broad, training in contemporary biomedical research and career mentorship. Salary will be competitive.
