Post-Doctoral Research Fellow in Molecular Imaging
Description: A Post-doctoral position is avilable for researchers interested in investigating cancer signaling pathways using in vivo imaging methods. Join a multi-disciplinary team in the emerging field of molecular imaging at the University of Michigan. This highly collaborative group uses innovative imaging technologies to observe molecular phenomena on the sub-cellular scale. Optical methods, including high resolution confocal, multiphoton, photoacoustic, and wide-field endoscopes, are used to perform repetitive imaging in small animal models of normal development and cancer processes. The small size of these instruments allows for longitudinal studies to be performed and to characterize the natural history of biological processes. Genetically-engineered mice and implanted human organoids that express fluorescent proteins are studied. These methods can be used to distinguish complex interactions among cells and proteins. These instruments are also used to perform FDA-regulated clinical studies to validate in vivo imaging performance in human patients in collaboration with academic physicians. MRI and ultrasound methods are used for validation.
Requirements: Candidates with a Ph.D. in molecular biology, biochemistry, cell biology, developmental biology, structural biology, genetics, microbiology, immunology, pharmacology, or related discipline are invited to apply. Experience with cell culture, microscopy, ELISA, PCR, RT-PCR, Western blot, immunohistochemistry, and immunofluorescence are desirable. Experience with handling of small animals, including mice, is preferred.
Environment: The laboratory is located in the Biomedical Science Research Building (BSRB) between the University of Michigan Medical Center and the science campus. The BSRB houses the Center for Molecular Imaging (CMI) (www.med.umich.edu/msair), a state-of-the-art small animal imaging facility, that has instruments for real time imaging, including Olympus FV1000MPE twin multi-photon microscope with Spectra-Physics Deep See femtosecond lasers, Endra Nexus 128 photoacoustic tomography scanner, Edgewave diode pumped Q-switched Nd-YAG laser, Opotek Phocus laser with optical parametric oscillator (OPO), Ultrasonix SonixTablet ultrasound scanner, Xenogen IVIS Spectrum, 200, and 100 (Caliper) systems, LI-COR Pearl Trilogy NIR fluorescence imaging system, Siemens Inveon PET/CT, GE Healthcare integrated eXplore SpeCZT/CT 120, and Varian horizontal bore MRI systems (9.4, 7, and 3T). Clinical trials are conducted in the hospital Medical Procedures Unit.
