Doctoral Researcher (f/div/m) in Microbiology & Bioinformatics

Job Details

The Leibniz Institute for Natural Product Research and Infection Biology – Hans Knöll Institute (Leibniz-HKI, www.leibniz-hki.de) investigates the pathobiology of human-pathogenic fungi and identifies targets for the development of novel natural product-based antibiotics. Talented and highly qualified candidates are invited to apply for a position in a newly established Microverse Junior Research Group as a

Doctoral Researcher (f/div/m) in Microbiology & Bioinformatics

for three and a half years initially.

Research Areas: Microbiology, Bioinformatics, Comparative Genomics
This project is part of a newly established research group using experimental and computational approaches

to understand how environmental fungi acquire the ability to cause human disease.

The field of study:

The successful candidate will use experimental methods and NGS datasets to investigate closely related pathogenic and non-pathogenic fungal species. The main tasks of the project might include:

  • Fungal growth and infection assays
  • Generation and analysis of genomic and transcriptional datasets
  • Comparative and population genomics

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree (or equivalent) in microbiology, molecular biology, bioinformatics, or a related discipline
  • Laboratory experience in microbiology and/or molecular biology
  • Basic knowledge of programming (R, Python) for data analysis
  • Experience with NGS data would be highly advantageous
  • Good written and spoken English communication skills

We offer:
The successful candidate will join the newly established Junior Research Group of Dr. Amelia Barber and hosted by Assoc. Prof. Gianni Panagiotou and the Systems Biology & Bioinformatics Group (SBI) at the Leibniz-HKI. SBI is a multidisciplinary group focused on understanding the role of the microbiome in metabolic disease, cancer, infection, and environmental microbial communities. SBI is currently coordinating the Horizon 2020 Innovative Training Network “BestTreat” with 16 international partners, is a member of the DFG Cluster of Excellence “Balance of the Microverse”, of the Hong Kong Area of Excellence “Institute of Metabolic Diseases”, of the DFG Collaborative Research Center/Transregio “FungiNet” and of the Collaborative Research Fund “MarineGEO Hong Kong”, all related to the integration of phenotypic, genomic and microbiome data. The successful candidate will be fully integrated in the SBI and benefit from shared samples, data, and methods with the other PhD students and post-doctoral researchers of the group. The position is part of a multi-center collaborative project coordinated by Prof. Oliver Kurzai at the University of Würzburg, and including partners at the Leibniz-HKI, Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, and Biotype  GmbH. We offer a convivial work atmosphere in an interdisciplinary and international research environment. The Leibniz-HKI is embedded in the outstanding scientific environment of the Beutenberg Campus providing state-of-the-art research facilities and a highly integrative network of life science groups. The group is part of the Microverse Cluster of Excellence and the PhD candidate will become a member of the Jena School of Microbial Communicationand have the option to participate in the structured program of the International Leibniz Research School.

Salary is paid according to German TV-L (salary agreement for public service employees). As an equal opportunity employer, the Leibniz-HKI is committed to increasing the percentage of female scientists and therefore especially encourages them to apply.

Company

The Leibniz Institute for Natural Product Research and Infection Biology – Hans Knöll Institute – was founded in 1992 and has been a member of the Leibniz-Association since 2003.

The scientists at the HKI carry out research into natural products from micro-organisms and into the infection biology of pathogenic fungi. Novel discoveries of natural products are investigated for their biological activity and modified purposefully for possible drug applications. In this context, the institute has been maintaining a rich tradition in Jena bringing in cutting-edge approaches to solutions and research methods beyond that.

The HKI is firmly integrated into the most important Thuringian research centre, the Beutenberg Campus Jena. Beyond the close corporation with the neighbourhood institutes, we collaborate intensively with the Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena, the Jena University Hospital and the University of Applied Sciences Ernst-Abbe in Jena. This leaves a link in numerous joint research projects and a strong commitment of our staff to academic teaching.

Approximately 380 members of staff are currently employed at the HKI. Further structural units possessing an integrative function and including independent junior research groups and cross-disciplinary institutions are organized around five scientific departments and the Bio Pilot Plant.
