TWELVE POSITIONS AVAILABLE AT THE SARS-FANG CENTRE IN QINGDAO, CHINA (A COLLABORATION OF THE OCEAN UNIVERSITY OF CHINA WITH THE UNIVERSITY OF BERGEN)

LOCATION

The Ocean University of China (OUC) is a comprehensive university with particular strengths in oceanography and fisheries science and related basic research. OUC has four campus in Qingdao with 18 Colleges, over 25,800 students and 3,300 faculty members. The university is proud to be the cradle of China’s marine professionals and it counts a large number of China’s marine science specialists among its alumni. SARS-FANG CENTRE

The Sars-Fang Centre, established in 2020, belongs to OUC and will perform basic research in evolutionary and developmental biology, using advanced methods of molecular /cell /computational biology and a variety of model organisms, including marine species. These will allow in-depth functional studies of biological processes. The Sars-Fang Centre is located in Qingdao and its establishment phase is co-financed by the University of Bergen (Norway). It is planned as a sister institute of the Sars International Centre for Marine Molecular Biology (www.uib.no/en/sarssenteret) in Norway which is a partner of E.M.B.L. (European Molecular Biology Laboratory) since 2003.

POSITIONS OFFERED

The Sars-Fang Centre is recruiting for three of its research groups 5 postdocs, 5 lab technicians and 2 animal facility technicians. We invite highly motivated, committed and talented outstanding candidates to join Sars-Fang in Qingdao, China. The successful candidates will join a vibrant scientific environment devoted to basic life science research.

There are currently four vacancies for postdoctoral position on the following projects:

  • Postdoctoral position 1 in Shi WANG’s group: Genome and Developmental Evolution of Marine Shellfish
  • Postdoctoral position 2 in Bo DONG’s group: The roles of cytoskeleton and extracellular matrix on ascidian notochord tubulogenesis and tail regression.       
  • Postdoctoral position 3 in Chengtian ZHAO’s group: the establishment of marine model organisms and their development and evolutionary mechanisms
  • Postdoctoral position 4 in Wei Wang’s group: Heart development mechanisms
  • Postdoctoral position 5 in Daniel CHOURROUT’s group: Tunicate Genome variation along the China Coast
  • Laboratory technician position 6 in Shi WANG’s group (Genetics/Genomics of Molluscs)
  • Laboratory technician position 7 in Bo DONG’s group (Ascidian Notochord Development and Metamorphosis)
  • Laboratory technician position 8 in Chengtian ZHAO’s group (Trichoplax development)
  • Laboratory technician position 9 in Wei WANG’s group (Ascidian Heart Development)
  • Laboratory technician position 10 in Daniel CHOURROUT’s group (Tunicate Developmental Genomics)
  • Two Technician positions 11/12 for Sars-Fang Marine facility

For postdoctoral positions, applicants must hold a PhD considered equivalent to Chinese PhD degrees (or obtain their PhD degree before starting) and have published in international peer reviewed journals. They must have solid experience of molecular biology and/or cell biology techniques and be able to guide graduate students. Experience of Bioinformatics tools is required for position 1 and will be an asset for the three other positions. Applicants for Laboratory technician positions should hold a Master degree or equivalent, have a good control of standard molecular techniques, demonstrate contribution to published research work and be able to assist graduate students.  Bachelor degree is necessary for the Marine facility technician positions, and experience with growing/breeding marine animals will be an asset.

The Sars-Fang Centre offers a professional, challenging and international working environment, with well-equipped laboratories and facilities. Personal conditions will depend on the qualifications and experience, with competitive salaries (for postdocs 200,000-250,000 RMB + extra 60,000 RMB for two years from Qingdao, up to 150,000-200,000 RMB for Laboratory technicians and up to 100,000-120,000 RMB for the Marine Facility technician) to which benefits can be added dependent on the position type and performance.

Postdoctoral positions are for a duration of 3 years, with possible prolongations dependent on evaluation and available budget. When particularly successful, candidates can be enrolled in talent programs and be considered for tenure positions at OUC. Technical positions may become permanent at OUC after one year.
