Christian-Albrechts-University Kiel and GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel are committed to attract more qualified women for professorships. The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at Kiel University and GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel jointly invite applications for a

Junior Professorship (W1)

in Marine Evolutionary Genomics

starting 1st April 2021. The junior professorship is initially for a period of 3 years and can be extended for another 3 years upon successful evaluation. The post is located at the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel and is assigned to the research unit "Marine Evolutionary Ecology" in the research division "Marine Ecology".

We are expecting applications from outstanding young scientists who, in addition to a very good doctoral thesis, have started to develop an independent research field after their doctorate and can demonstrate scientific publications outside their doctorate in international, peer-reviewed journals.

The research area of the successful candidate should be in an innovative field of marine evolutionary biology and genomics, preferably involving multicellular animals or plants. The research unit "Marine Evolutionary Ecology" currently focuses on (epi)genomic adaptation processes of native and invasive marine organisms to rapid changes in the marine environment, the evolution of host-microbe interactions, the causes and consequences of sexual selection and the effects of overfishing on the genetic diversity of fish stocks. This junior professorship is central to the focus "Adaptation of Marine Life: from Genes to Ecosystems" within the Helmholtz Earth & Environment PoF IV program "Changing Earth - Sustaining Our Future".

Cooperation with joint research initiatives at CAU Kiel and the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel is desirable, in particular participation within the Kiel University research priorities Kiel Marine Science and/or Kiel Life Science as well as with the Kiel Evolution Center (KEC) and the SFB1182 (Origin and Function of Metaorganisms). Experience in raising third-party funding would be an advantage.

The position is equipped with substantial resources, in particular shared working time of technical staff and a doctoral position for an initial period of 2 years. The successful applicant is expected to have a sound knowledge of methods in population genetics and ecological genomics, which also forms the basis for his/her teaching commitments. Teaching will take place within the framework of the Master's program "Biological Oceanography". The teaching obligations are based on the currently state regulation on teaching obligations at universities (LVVO) of the state of Schleswig-Holstein and currently amount to 4 LVS (semester hours).

Attention is drawn to the employment requirements of § 64 of the Higher Education Act of the State of Schleswig-Holstein. Further information can be found under http://www.berufungen.uni-kiel.de. Information about the vacant position and the research unit can be obtained from Prof. Dr. Thorsten Reusch (treusch@geomar.de).

Information about GEOMAR can be found at http://www.geomar.de.

The Christian-Albrechts-University Kiel and the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel are striving to increase the proportion of female scientists in research and teaching and therefore strongly encourage suitably qualified women to apply. Women are given priority in the case of equal aptitude, qualification and professional performance.

The University and the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel are committed to the employment of severely disabled people. Therefore, handicapped applicants will be given preferential consideration if they are suitably qualified.

Written applications in English with the usual documents (curriculum vitae, copies of academic certificates, list of publications, short research and teaching perspectives) should be sent to the Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel, D-24098 Kiel, stating your private and business address with telephone number and email by 24th September 2020 (preferably in electronic form in a single PDF file to berufungen@mnf.uni-kiel.de).
