The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has recently received a donation of HK$500 million from Li Ka Shing Foundation to establish the first Institute of Synthetic Biology in Hong Kong.  In preparation for the establishment of Li Ka Shing Institute of Synthetic Biology at HKUST, we are proactively recruiting a number of global talents in synthetic biology for tenure-track or tenured faculty positions at all ranks, namely Assistant Professor/Associate Professor/Professor.  For a highly qualified well-established scholar, an endowed Chair Professorship at the Institute would be considered.

In general, the Institute focuses on thematic applications in biomedicine, health technology, sustainable living and food.  We aim to translate synthetic biology from laboratory scale to field deployment.  Applicants with strong research expertise in non-model microorganisms, genome engineering, and data analytics-enabled synthetic biology to accelerate and optimize design-build-test-learn cycle are all welcome.

The successful applicant would be affiliated with the Institute through academic appointment with one or two academic units at the University.  The units that the positions would be academically associated with include Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, Division of Life Science, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Department of Ocean Science, Department of Chemistry, etc.

Applicants should have a PhD degree in a related field.  Successful candidates are expected to develop strong, independent and innovative programs of externally sponsored research; teach effectively at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels; and participate in services of the Institute, the Department, the School and the University.  For information about the University, please visit www.ust.hk.

Salary is highly competitive and will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.  Fringe benefits include annual leave, medical and dental benefits.   Housing benefits will also be provided where applicable. Appointment at the Professor rank will be on substantive basis, whereas initial appointment at Assistant Professor/Associate Professor rank will normally be on a three-year contract.  A gratuity will be payable upon successful completion of contract.
