DIRECTOR, URA SANDIA SITE OFFICE

UNIVERSITIES RESEARCH ASSOCIATION

Washington, DC August 24, 2020

Universities Research Association, Inc. (URA), a nonprofit 501(c)(3) corporation whose membership includes over 90 premier research universities, is seeking applications to fill the position of URA Sandia Site Office Director (USSO) at its Albuquerque, NM location.

URA is a member of the Honeywell-led team, National Technology and Engineering Solutions of Sandia (NTESS), for management and operation (M&O) of Sandia National Laboratories (SNL). Since 1967 URA has also been the M&O contractor for Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, a responsibility since 2007 shared with the University of Chicago through the Fermi Research Alliance, LLC (FRA). URA also receives funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF) for U.S. participation in the 17-country Pierre Auger Cosmic Ray Observatory in Argentina. The USSO Director leads all efforts at URA’s Sandia Site Office, is a member of the URA executive team, and is responsible for oversight and implementation of URA’s obligations under its NTESS subcontract.

The position requires a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in science or a related discipline; a minimum of ten years of leadership and scientific expertise, including leadership at executive level; directly applicable experience in building partnerships between universities and national laboratories; and strong executive communication and organization skills. The position is located at Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, NM. The primary duties of the USSO Director include working with science and technology leadership at Sandia National Laboratories to develop initiatives defining and implementing scientific collaborations and broad university partnerships; maintaining a replicable, efficient process for conducting in-depth collaborative reviews of critical scientific and technical efforts at SNL; bringing new insights and external bench-marking from world class experts to Sandia’s on-going S&T research; developing programs to promote and maintain a pipeline of diverse scientific and technical talent at Sandia; and managing the Chief Research Officer External Advisory Board (CEAB) in support of the responsibilities and requirements of the CRO. In addition to managing staff and all aspects of USSO operations, the USSO Director also supports the URA Executive Director in his/her responsibilities to the URA Board of Trustees and the Council of Presidents, participates in URA corporate responsibilities related to Sandia National Laboratories, and ensures that the Executive Director and Board of Trustees are fully and currently informed.

Some travel is required. Applicants must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e. of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted. The successful candidate will be required to undergo pre-employment drug testing and a pre-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record, and employment and education verification. Employment will be subject to the Q-clearance federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or materials. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, or other serious misconduct may cause a security clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE and will result in termination of employment. URA is an Equal Opportunity Employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, or veteran status and any other protected class under applicable State or federal law.

URA offers a fully competitive package of benefits. Salary is commensurate with background and experience.

Review of applications will begin October 1, 2020 and will continue until the position is filled. Applications and nominations, including a one-page cover letter and resume, should be submitted to recruiting@ura-hq.org
