JOB PURPOSE:

Center of Innovation for Flow through Porous Media (COIFPM) at the University of Wyoming is seeking a highly-motivated research scientist to join its computational research branch to be located in Fort Collins, Colorado. The focus of the modeling team is to develop advanced computational tools to simulate multi-phase flow and transport in porous materials. To this end, we utilize high performance computing techniques to build innovative and highly parallelized computer platforms that are tested on powerful supercomputers and validated against experimental data.

The successful candidates will be expected to work closely with graduate students and other research scientists in the group and publish in high-quality peer-reviewed scientific journals. In addition, the researchers will have full access to well-characterized experimental data generated at COIFPM, the world’s largest experimental research center in this area, which is located at the University of Wyoming’s campus in Laramie, Wyoming.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform cutting-edge research on modeling of multi-phase flow and transport in porous media.
  • Incorporate new insights gained through experimental studies of multi-phase flow into computational platforms.
  • Evaluate, implement, and apply up-scaling methods to facilitate flow simulation in extra-large domains.
  • Communicate and interact with interdisciplinary project teams.
  • Prepare research proposals, progress reports, and manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
  • Present research findings at appropriate scientific meetings.
  • Performs other related responsibilities as necessitated by the position.

ABOUT COIFPM:

COIFPM (https://coifpm.com) is the world’s largest experimental research facility focused on flow through porous media problems with applications primarily in oil and gas recovery and carbon utilization and storage. It is developed using more than $100 million investment. The facility provides imaging and flow capabilities at atomic, nano, micro, and macro scales. Furthermore, it establishes a massive capacity for members to conduct numerous studies in parallel.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A Ph.D. degree in Computational/Applied Mathematics, Computational/Applied Physics, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • A minimum of two years of computational research experience outside of Ph.D. thesis research
  • Experience in developing object-oriented software in C++ or similar languages.
  • Experience in high-performance computing and parallel programming using, for example, MPI, OpenMP, and CUDA
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience in high-level programming languages such as Python and/or Julia
  • Experience in using artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques
  • Demonstrated ability in developing high-quality, peer-reviewed scientific journal publications.

REQUIRED MATERIALS:

Complete the online application and upload the following for a complete application: cover letter, resume or C.V. and contact information for four work-related references.
