The Max Planck Institute for Brain Research and the Max Planck Society invite applications for

Max Planck Research Group(s)
at the MPI for Brain Research

The Max Planck Institute for Brain Research in Frankfurt am Main (www.brain.mpg.de) is a vibrant and international research institution with a focus on understanding the organization and functions of the brain’s circuits. The institute is located in a recently built modern building with spacious, state-of-the art labs for experimental and theoretical research. The Institute’s research currently comprises three scientific departments (Directors: Erin Schuman, Gilles Laurent, Moritz Helmstaedter) and four Max Planck Research Groups. The building is designed to foster interactions and interdisciplinary science. Research at the institute focuses on neural circuit function (mechanistic to computational), at scales ranging from molecules to circuits, aimed at explaining how individual neurons and circuits function and give rise to computation, perception, learning and memory, sleep and behavior. Approaches are generally cross-disciplinary (e.g., genetic, molecular, electrophysiological, imaging, computational). Our investigators are part of the interdisciplinary neuroscience network in Frankfurt, including Goethe University, Max Planck Institute of Biophysics, the Ernst-Struengmann-Institute and the Frankfurt Institute of Advanced Studies. PhD training is organized within the International Max Planck Research School (IMPRS) for Neural Circuits. Research support is also provided through four scientific core facilities (Imaging, Proteomics, Scientific Computing and Scientific Data Visualization and Analysis), a central animal facility and general services. A child-care facility with reserved slots for institute members is located on Campus.

We are planning to recruit one to two new Max Planck Research Group Leaders in 2021. We encourage applications from scientists with interests consistent with those of the institute and a desire to build their own independent research program within an international, exciting, interactive and supportive research environment. Selected candidates will be offered a Max Planck Research Group for a period of five years with the possibility of extension (2 x 2 years). Funding includes the group leader position (equivalent to an assistant professorship) as well as additional research positions, budget, and competitive start-up packages. Detailed information is available at:
https://www.mpg.de/career/max-planck-research-groups.

Applications should include a CV, a list of publications, a one-page summary of scientific achievements, a two-page research plan and arrange for two (or more) letters of recommendation to be submitted independently at mprgl-applications@brain.mpg.de. We encourage applications from female scientists and under-represented minorities. Successful candidates will be invited to a virtual symposium on November 13, 2020 for final selection.

The Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Science is an independent, non-profit research organization that primarily promotes and supports basic research. The society currently operates 86 institutes and research facilities with more than 23,900 employees, including 6,900 scientists.

The Max-Planck-Society, an equal opportunity employer, is committed to diversity and inclusion in all aspects of recruiting and employment.

Please send your application in a single PDF file (CV-publications-achievements-plan), no later than 30.09.2020 to: mprgl-applications@brain.mpg.de. Please arrange for the letters of recommendation to be sent to the same email address.
