Dr. Adam Burgener invites applications for a full time post-doctoral position at the Center for Global Health and Diseases at Case Western Reserve University. Funding is available for multiple positions for 5 years. These are research projects utilizing multi-‘omic approaches to study the microbiome in infection and disease, specifically women’s health. Postdoctoral fellows will benefit from the career and mentoring opportunities available in the Center for Global Health and Diseases.

Qualifications: We are looking for candidates in two general areas to support research projects:

Proteomics/Metabolomics: A Ph.D. degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Immunology, or related discipline with expertise in mass spectrometry and metabolomics. Experience in metabolomics, proteomics, and tandem mass spectrometry is a requirement, including data analytics of mass spectrometry data. Experience in studies of the microbiome in human disease would be an asset.

Metagenomics: A Ph.D. degree in Microbiology, Immunology, Genetics, Biochemistry, or related discipline with expertise in the microbiome and disease. Experience in metagenomics, shotgun sequencing, 16S rRNA analysis, and/or rtPCR of the microbiome is a requirement, including data analytics of genomic datasets. Anaerobic bacterial culture is an asset.

Position description: We are looking for individuals who have an interest in studying the microbiome and how it affects women’s reproductive health in different areas of research including susceptibility to viral infection, cervical cancer, pre-term birth, and bacterial vaginosis. These are well-powered prospective clinical cohort studies with substantial clinical biospecimens available to study host-microbiome relationships. The position will include leading the primary analysis of clinical microbiome studies, supervise technical staff in the project, and design follow-up experiments to test mechanisms. This position will join a diverse international team and provide the opportunity to travel, including those in Spain, Africa, Canada and the United States. Qualified individuals will demonstrate the potential for research as evidenced by their training and peer-reviewed publications and should become competitive for research grants.

Research Lab: Dr. Burgener’s research group (https://burgenerlab.com/) specializes in using systems biology tools to study biological processes important for human health, including inflammation, host immunity, and the microbiome. Our lab has made important discoveries for reproductive health, including how the microbiome affects HIV susceptibility in women (DOI: 10.1126/science.aai9383). We are a highly interdisciplinary team of scientists, post-doc’s, graduate students and technicians with expertise in systems biology, bioinformatics, microbiome, proteomics, and immunology. Our new laboratory at CGHD is equipped with new state-of-the art Thermo tandem mass spectrometers for proteomics, metabolomics, post-translational modification research. This also includes NextGen sequencing (Illumina) platforms for shotgun metagenomics, transcriptomics, targeted gene analysis. We employ in vitro and animal model systems to evaluate host-microbial interactions. Case Western Reserve University houses core further facilities for advanced genomic sequencing, animal model studies, immunology, microscopy, and a wide array of platforms for translational research.

Pay Scale: This pay would be set at NIH rates and commensurate with experience. Those successful at acquiring external fellowships would be eligible for a merit increase.

To Apply: Applicants must be eligible to work full-time in the U.S. Applicants should submit a cover letter, CV, and names of three references to (electronic submissions only please):
