The Department of Computational Mathematics, Science and Engineering (CMSE) invites applications from outstanding candidates for fixed term research associate (Postdoctoral Researchers) positions in the broad areas of Computational Modeling and Data Science (https://cmse.msu.edu/).

CMSE focuses on the science of algorithm development for addressing problems in STEM disciplines, pushing the boundaries of knowledge through computing. CMSE has core strengths in the foundations of data science, foundations of scientific computing, inverse problems and imaging, fluids, plasmas and fields, structural biology and omics, and computational material science.

Multiple Bioinformatics and Computational Biology Postdoctoral Researcher positions are available in the lab of Dr. Jianrong Wang (wangj164@msu.edu). Research in Dr. Wang’s lab is in the intersection of machine learning, statistical modeling, bioinformatics and computational biology, with a focus on building novel Bayesian models and efficient learning algorithms to construct large-scale regulatory networks and to decode the genetic basis of human diseases, based on big-data from genomics. The Postdoctoral Researcher will develop new statistical and computational methods and implement on big datasets for biological insights. Detailed information of Dr. Wang and his research can be found: https://cmse.msu.edu/directory/faculty/jianrong-wang. Candidates should have (or expect to have soon) a PhD degree in related fields (bioinformatics, statistics, computer science or mathematics), have solid background in machine learning and statistical modeling, and have strong programming skills in Python or R. Candidates with research experiences in computational biology, bioinformatics, functional genomics, gene regulation, NGS data processing are preferred. In addition to the below application materials requested, please also provide two publications (as first author or co-first author) from prior research.

Applicants must have a Ph.D from a STEM discipline with a focus on the science of algorithms, either Computational Modeling or Data Science. The Ph.D must be completed at the time of employment. While exceptional candidates from all areas of computational science will be considered, Postdoctoral Researchers in CMSE are associated to a particular tenure system faculty member. Applicants must specify an area of focus and faculty they want to work with in the cover letter of their application. Applicants must provide a Research Statement, Teaching Statement, Curriculum Vita, and three references. Applicants must apply through the MSU online system, http://careers.msu.edu/ and refer to posting number 616041. Applicants also need to notify Dr. Jianrong Wang (wangj164@msu.edu) after the application is submitted to the online system.

Typically, such a position is for two years and depends on availability of funds. Renewal for the second year is based on a performance evaluation. A third year is possible, subject to funding and satisfactory performance evaluations.

Search will continue until the positions are filled. Special research questions should be sent to the relevant faculty member the applicant is hoping to work with. A list of faculty members
