POSITION OBJECTIVE

This position within the Department of Pathology is a highly motivated individual with good communication skills and the ability to interact with a diverse group of biologists. As a research associate (RA), he/she will work under limited supervision and is expected to carry out complex in vivo/ex vivo research assignments. In addition, the RA will present data at departmental seminars and scientific meetings, assist with manuscript preparation, and contribute preliminary data for grant proposals. The research associate will contribute to the experimental design and executing designed experiments for the project. These include small animal vascular surgeries, immune cell isolation, cell culture, and protein/RNA purification. Studies also include protein: protein and protein interactions. the candidate will actively participate in performing the experiments and preparation of manuscripts. The selected research associate will research vascular inflammatory disorders and clinical problems based on experimental evidence. In addition to these, the

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Write and publish manuscripts on past and current work relating to vascular research
  2. Design and perform experiments in cardiovascular research (in vivo/ex vivo). Keep appropriate experimental records and documentation and analyze the results with the Principal Investigator
  3. Develop, adapt, and implement new research techniques and protocols
  4. Manage project timelines and the monitoring of the project budgets
  5. Analyze, interpret, summarize and compile data
  6. Attend seminars and training sessions on various topics
  7. Generate independent funding

NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

University: Frequent contact with other CWRU collaborating Departments including other basic science departments

External: Infrequent contact with vendors, ARC, other collaborating investigators

Students: Daily contact with students

QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Experience: Ph.D. degree in vascular biology or biochemistry with 3-5 years of laboratory research experience.

REQUIRED SKILLS

  1. Demonstrate expertise in vascular biology and immunology (in vivo/ex vivo).
  2. Ability to operate laboratory equipment. 
  3. Willingness to follow protocols and provide suggestions to the PI. 
  4. Professional and effective oral and written communication skills; and good interpersonal skills with the ability to work and communicate with various individuals within and external to the University.  Must be able to clearly relay information to the PI and other researchers and prepare written documents for grant submissions, manuscripts, publications, etc. as needed.
  5. Strong organization skills; ability to multi-task, prioritize, and meet deadlines.  Must demonstrate attention to detail and accuracy, time management skills, and follow-through.  
  6. Effective management skills; ability to lead, train, work with, and elicit cooperation from team members and staff. 
  7. Ability to work effectively independently and collaboratively within a team.  Must be highly motivated, responsible, dependable, and a self-starter.  Must demonstrate a strong desire to learn and to advance research.
  8. Effective problem-solving skills; must demonstrate excellent analytical skills, sound judgment, and good decision-making. 
  9. Must demonstrate flexibility and ability to work under pressure; must be able and willing to conform to shifting priorities, demands, and timeline. 
  10. Good computer skills; must demonstrate proficiency in Microsoft Office and data management.

WORKING CONDITIONS

General laboratory environment, including work with exposure to hazardous chemicals. Will need to complete all necessary DOES safety training(s).  Occasional heavy lifting required up 25 to 49lbs.  This position will deal with job hazards such as being around moving machinery, bloodborne pathogens, chemicals, fumes, dust, infectious agents, and being present in restricted areas.
