The McGovern Institute for Brain Research at MIT seeks a scientific advisor to work with the director, faculty, and staff to facilitate strategic planning and implementation of major research initiatives that support its overall scientific vision and mission. 

Responsibilities:

  • Translate McGovern’s vision into collaborative research plans to ensure that scientific goals align with the vision
  • Draft reports and prepare public presentations and award nominations
  • Write descriptions of research within/beyond McGovern for the scientific community, donors, and the public
  • Serve as scientific advisor to McGovern headquarters and scientific mission liaison within/beyond the McGovern Institute community
  • Provide advice to faculty and staff on papers/presentations
  • Initiate and support joint scientific endeavors with external collaborators
  • Identify potential collaborators, initiate proposals, and oversee communication to nurture relationships and ensure efficient completion of projects
  • Monitor progress and help coordinate efforts within McGovern’s major research centers
  • Work with staff and external collaborators to resolve blocking issues and ensure achievement of key scientific goals
  • Work with directors to manage the McGovern Institute Neurotechnology Program, marmoset genetics program, and McGovern research centers
  • Support the McGovern director with developing and implementing strategic plans/policies
  • Assume administrative oversight of McGovern’s core facilities to ensure that technological capabilities are aligned with user needs and financial resources
  • Advise junior researchers
  • Seek out new sources of funding and write grant applications
  • Give presentations and tours
  • Perform elated tasks as requested 

Required Qualifications: 

  • Ph.D in neuroscience or related field
  • Experience developing and managing large strategic initiatives
  • Established publication record
  • Broad interest in neuroscience ability to discuss a wide range of projects
  • Excellent organizational and written and verbal communication skills

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Editorial/communications experience
