JOB DESCRIPTION:

A Postdoctoral Fellow position in the field of microbial pathogenomics and infectious diseases is available immediately in the Department of Biology at the University of Texas at San Antonio. The Eppinger laboratory is affiliated to the South Texas Center for Emerging Infectious Diseases (STCEID) and funded through the National Institute of Health (NIH) and the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The laboratory uses genomic epidemiology approaches to study bacterial pathogens. Technologies include large-scale whole genome sequencing and typing (WGST) and genome-wide association studies (GWAS) to elucidate how bacterial genotypes relate to pathogenic potential and disease outcome. Integrating such genome scale information is of major public health relevance and research findings are foundational to identify hypervirulent subpopulations, risk assessment, diagnostics, and biosurveillance. Training opportunities in the laboratory are complemented by resources provided by STCEID, the Department of Biology, UTSA Faculty Center and the UTSA/UTHSCA Postdoctoral Research Network offering career development workshops and outreach opportunities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • The candidate will work independently in a collaborative team environment and produce, mine and analyze genomics- and phenotypic data of microbial pathogens.
  • The candidate will participate in the writing of manuscripts and grants, present data at scientific meetings, and assist in the training of graduate- and undergraduate students.

For more information about the Eppinger laboratory and publications go to PubMed http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/?term=eppinger+m

HOW TO APPLY: For immediate consideration, interested applicants should submit an application including a current CV, statement of research interests, and contacts of references.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum qualifications include a Ph.D. in the areas of Microbial Genomics, Molecular Microbiology, or Computational Biology.
  • A demonstrated track record of expertise in microbial genomics and NGS data analysis is required.
  • Proficiency in at least one bioinformatics environments, such as Linux/Unix, Python, Galaxy and/or R.
  • Hands on working experience in molecular microbiology techniques is preferred.
  • Strong motivation and excellent written and oral English communication skills.
