An Introduction to ZJOU

Zhejiang Ocean University (ZJOU) is a research and teaching type university with marine characteristics jointly built by the Ministry of Natural Resources and People’s Government of Zhejiang Province, which is also the provincial key construction university. It is located in Zhoushan Archipelago New Area (Zhoushan City, Zhejiang province), which is a state-level new area and famous around the world as “Buddha Land between Sky and Sea”and “Port City for Fishing”. ZJOU consists of 10 schools, 1 independent college and the teaching and research institutions such as Zhejiang Marine Fisheries Research Institute. It is the construction unit of “International Characteristic University” of Zhejiang Province and has a sino-foreign cooperative school— Pisa Ocean Graduate School of ZJOU. The university has science, agronomy, engineering, management, economics, literature, history, education and other disciplines, of which there are 9 provincial first-level disciplines. Among them, Fisheries Science ranked the third in 2019 Soft Science Ranking of China’s Best Disciplines and Marine Science ranked the seventh. ZJOU offers 9 primary disciplines authorized to grant master’s degrees in Marine Science, Fisheries Science, Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering, Oil and Natural Gas Engineering, Food Science and Engineering, Agriculture and Forestry Economic Management, Mechanical Engineering, Mathematics, and Hydraulic Engineering. 5 disciplines are authorized to grant the professional master’s degrees in Engineering, Agriculture, Education, Tourism Management and Pharmaceutics. It is also authorized to grant equivalent master’s degrees. ZJOU offers 48 undergraduate programs, including 2 national first-class specialties, 2 national characteristic specialties, 10 provincial first-class specialties, 9 provincial key specialties, 4 provincial dominant specialties and 8 provincial new characteristic specialties.

ZJOU boasts 11 dual-employed academicians, 35 experts (honored as National Distinguished Experts, Experts Awarded the State Council Special Allowance etc.), and 80 scholars. In the past five years, ZJOU has won 13 national prizes which include the first, second and third prizes of the National Science and Technology Progress Award and the prizes of the National Science Congress Awards. It has built national research platforms such as the National Research Center for Marine Facility Aquaculture Engineering and Technology, the National-Local Joint Engineering Laboratory of Exploitation and Utilization of Marine Biological Germplasm Resources, the National-Local Joint Engineering Laboratory of Port-vicinity Oil and Gas Storage and Transportation Technology and the International Science and Technology Cooperation Base of Marine Areas; and Xixuan Island has been built into the Fishery Science and Technology Research Base. ZJOU has 2 maritime research vessels, of which “Zhehaike No. 1” has become one of the National Maritime Research Vessels.
