PROFESSORSHIP (W2/W3) FOR PEACE AND CONFLICT RESEARCH IN THE NATURAL SCIENCES

research in the natural sciences

commencing as soon as possible, ref. no. 2336.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

We are seeking applicants with an international record in peace and conflict research from a natural science perspective and with a background in physics. The position will be established in the Department of Physics. The successful candidate is also expected to play a leading role at The Carl Friedrich von Weizsäcker-Centre for Science and Peace Research (ZNF) of Universität Hamburg. Research areas may include, for example: nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation; the development of verification technology; risk evaluation for weapons of mass destruction; or risk assessment for new technologies, etc.

We also expect the successful candidate to continue and further develop our natural-science-based peace research and its interdisciplinary integration in Hamburg and Europe. This involves conducting your own research and teaching activities at ZNF as well as intensively forging national and international networks. Willingness to cooperate and interact with research groups at Universität Hamburg, the Institute for Peace Research and Security Policy (IFSH), the general public, and policy makers is also expected. Teaching duties include lectures, practical courses, pro-seminars and seminars, and supervising final theses.

Section 12 subsection 7 sentence 2 of the Hamburg higher education act (Hamburgisches Hochschulgesetz, HmbHG) applies.

REQUIREMENTS:
Academic qualifications and additional requirements as specified in Section 15 HmbHG.

ADDITIONAL CRITERIA:
Applicants are expected to have international research experience as well as a successful track record in acquiring external funding and carrying out externally funded projects. The University places particular emphasis on the quality of teaching and therefore requests that applicants provide details of their teaching experience and objectives. We expect a willingness to conduct and coordinate interdisciplinary courses.

We also expect applicants to have completed university studies and to have a doctorate or comparable degree, preferably in physics.

Non-German-speaking post holders are expected to acquire the language skills necessary to teach in German (Level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) within two years of commencing employment providing they do not have the requisite skills when starting.

Following hearings to evaluate knowledge and expertise, management and human resources skills will be assessed by an assessment center.
