Job Details

The Discovery Chemistry Research & Technologies organization within Lilly Research Laboratories is seeking an Analytical Chemist and teammate to join the Medicinal Chemistry group located at the Lilly Biotechnology Center, San Diego, CA. You will use state-of-the-art instrumentation and automation, analytical and preparative chromatography systems, mass spectrometry and NMR to characterize and deliver high quality drug discovery compounds. This is an exciting role on the front lines of drug development aimed at improving the lives of patients around the world.

  • Keep safety as your top priority at any time, striving to maintain a strong safety culture.
  • Perform small molecule purification/isolation using liquid handling robotics, and analytical and preparative mass guided chromatography.
  • Perform analytical techniques such as NMR and LC/MS used for characterization of pharmaceutical compounds.
  • Contribute to new options for the continuous development of processes and assay methodologies that will improve the productivity, timeliness and scientific impact of analytical support.
  • Work as a team with other Analytical chemists, Organic chemists, in-sourced personnel, external resources and data management groups to flexibly partner with project scientists and project teams to deliver key decision-making results.
  • Work closely with members of the global Analytical group to manage samples from remote sites and develop a network of partners to accommodate excess capacity.
  • When necessary, supervise and contribute to the scientific development of less experienced team members by laboratory-based mentorship in new techniques, good scientific practice and laboratory safety. As appropriate, develop Standard Operating Procedures, instrument maintenance and testing plans.

Basic Qualifications

  • BA or BS in Chemistry or similar area of study
  • At least 1 year of relevant experience

Additional Skills/Preferences

  • Hands-on knowledge of acquiring and interpreting data from mass-guided analytical and preparative HPLC/MS instrumentation and 1D and 2D NMR.
  • Hands-on experience with Bruker NMR and Agilent HPLC/MS instruments.
  • Ability to effectively engage as team player in a multidisciplinary and international environment through effective oral and written communication.
  • Proficient use of Microsoft Office applications.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to manage several projects simultaneously.
