Applicants with outstanding research accomplishments and significant research experience or potential are invited to apply for the position of Director, Center to Advance Predictive Biology, a new multi-disciplinary center in the Brown Institute for Translational Science (https://www.brown.edu/research/projects/center-to-advance-predictive-biology/). This is an open rank tenure track position with potential for endowment in a Center-affiliated department in the Division of Biology and Medicine at Brown University. Applicants must have a PhD and/or MD to be considered for the position.

The Center is focused on state-of-the-art approaches to understanding the basis of human health and disease, and especially the identification of alternatives to animals for the testing of environmental toxicants and the discovery of new drugs and therapeutics. It is now widely recognized by numerous stakeholders, including regulatory agencies, various industry sectors and advocacy groups, that animal models and simple 2D cell culture systems are limited in their ability to predict toxicity as well as efficacy. New and innovative biology platforms are needed to accurately reflect human physiology and disease. Examples include, but are not limited to, research using spheroids/organoids/microtissues, IPSCs and other reprogramming techniques, and high throughput and computational approaches. Automation and new big data analytics of these platforms will help usher in a new era of predictive biology.

The Director will lead a community of faculty, postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, and undergraduates from across Brown University’s departments in the Division of Biology & Medicine, the School of Engineering, as well as affiliated hospital partners. In addition to maintaining an outstanding, externally funded research program, the Director will be expected to propel the Center’s innovation, advance its academic mission, elevate its national and international stature, and recruit new faculty. Opportunities for collaborative, interdisciplinary research and mentorship in an NIEHS T32 Training Program in Environmental Pathology, an NIGMS T32 Training Program in Molecular Pharmacology and Physiology, as well as the Biotechnology, Biomedical Engineering, and Pathobiology Graduate Programs are also available.
