Job Details

The primary purpose of this Senior Research Assistant position in Experimental Radiation Oncology at MD Anderson Cancer Center is to provide highly technical work in medical and related research projects.

The Senior Research Assistant exercises considerable imagination, initiative and inventiveness in planning and executing the details of experiments and in evaluating and interpreting the results. Will be responsible for major participation in the development and revision of techniques, assembles and operates laboratory apparatus and equipment. Collaborates or assists with supervisor and research staff with preparation of reports and grant requests. Impacts laboratory research techniques, production and procedures. Carry out lab duties that include purchasing organization and lab safety. The ideal candidate will have experience with mouse colony management and maintenance.

KEY FUNCTIONS

  • Exercises considerable imagination, initiative and inventiveness in planning and executing the details of experiments and in evaluating and interpreting the results. The experiments involve determining the mechanisms of prostate cancer using mouse models and biochemical methods.
  • Develop, image and measure tumors using genetically engineered mouse models and xenograft mouse models.

  • Perform a broad range of cell and molecular biology assays involving molecular biology and biochemistry of DNA, RNA and protein, including genotyping, immunohistochemistry (IHC), immunofluorescence, qPCR, western blots and cell culture.

  • Responsible for coordinating and performing daily animal care of transgenic mice and health flagging. Routine husbandry such as ear-tagging, tail docking, weaning, making doxy water, etc.

  • Records and evaluates data obtained in accordance with methods requested. Ensure that data is entered in a timely manner.

  • Oversees lab equipment and supplies, and maintains inventory necessary to complete projects and experiments as assigned. Maintains high level of knowledge regarding equipment, procedures and safety; assembles and operates laboratory apparatus and equipment.

  • Carry out lab duties that include daily ordering, purchasing organization and lab safety. Assist the supervisor with ensuring compliance with federal/MDACC safety and IACUC requirements.

  • Supervises and collaborates with lab members in their work and assists them as assigned or delegated.


QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Required: Bachelor's degree in one of the natural sciences or related field.

Preferred: Master's degree with major course work in one of the basic sciences.

Experience

Required: Three years of experience in scientific or experimental research work.

With preferred degree, one year of required experience.

Preferred: Experience with mouse models and animal care.
