Position Description:
Ideal Candidate Statement:

 

 

The ideal candidate for this position will be someone who:

  1. Is a team player who works in consultation with faculty while working independently.
  2. Possesses lab skills required to set up, troubleshoot and maintain college-level labs and demos in chemistry.
  3. Is able to consult user manuals and implement the technical instructions therein to ensure all lab setups and demos are functional ahead of the lab sessions.
  4. Has working knowledge of basic chemistry principles.
  5. Is familiar with the equipment used in Chemistry labs, and possesses skills and experiences in instrumentation cleaning and repairs.
  6. Has experience in managing student workers.
  7. Is able to construct and help develop lab experiments and demo setups.
  8. Conducts periodic checks to ascertain the proper working condition of all equipment and, if applicable, troubleshoot and/or initiate and manage service requests to repair failing equipment.
  9. Ensures that all lab and demonstration equipment is stored in a safe and organized manner, fully inventoried and documented, accessible to all users at any time of the workweek.
  10. Possesses very good documentation skills, manages technical instruction sheets, lab write-ups, purchase orders, vendor information, repair and surplus orders and services while staying within budget.
  11. Pays strong attention to and follows safety regulations.
  12. Possesses good technical writing and verbal communication skills; helps faculty in creating and improving lab instructions and is able to explain a demonstration or lab setup to a faculty member or visitor, when needed.
  13. Keeps abreast of new laboratory exercises and technologies in Chemistry, and discusses innovations with faculty.
  14. Has experience in a Chemistry lab in an educational or industry setting is highly desirable and preferred.

Job Description Summary:
This is a 100%, 12 month, Classified Position.

 

This is a day shift position.

The District reserves the right to hire one or more Science Laboratory Technicians from this pool of qualified candidates.

BASIC FUNCTION:

Under the direction of the Academic Dean, perform specialized and technical duties to assist in the operation and maintenance of an instructional laboratory.

Essential Duties:
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Perform specialized and technical duties to assist in the operation and maintenance of an instructional laboratory; prepare various solutions for laboratory activities; assemble and install new equipment; assure efficient laboratory operations.

Prepare equipment and materials for biology, microbiology, chemistry, anatomy, biotechnology, physics and physiology laboratory demonstrations and exercises; set up laboratory apparatus; prepare and label aqueous and non-aqueous reagents; dispense proper quantities of materials; retrieve and store unused material and equipment as required.

Prepare equipment and materials for demonstrations in a designated scientific field of study; assure safety and condition of requested materials; prepare mammalian and bacterial cell cultures aseptically as assigned by the position; freeze and store in assigned containers.

Provide instructional support to faculty and students in the use of a variety of equipment, materials and supplies in the instructional setting; prepare and issue instructional materials and equipment for classroom demonstrations; maintain computerized records of materials and equipment utilized by students.

Maintain laboratory environment in a safe, clean and orderly condition; control and maintain hazardous waste materials chemicals, specimens and other materials utilized and produced during laboratory experiments; arrange for proper disposal of hazardous waste materials; report repair needs to appropriate personnel.

Order, receive and store supplies, materials and equipment; maintain inventories and assure adequate stock levels; communicate with vendors to resolve issues and discrepancies.

Test, adjust, maintain and perform minor repairs including necessary calibrations to apparatus and equipment; properly dispose of bio-hazardous waste and other hazardous materials; report major repair needs or arrange for repairs as needed; collect and deposit breakage payments from students.

Prepare and maintain various records and reports including hazardous waste reports, chemical inventories, log books, preparation sheets and other documents related to laboratory operations and activities as required.
Train, select, evaluate and provide work direction to student workers as assigned.

Assist in the coordination of the use of laboratory facilities; assure the availability of appropriate supplies and equipment; communicate with faculty to schedule laboratory usage.

Operate a variety of equipment related to the specialized area of assignment including computers, autoclaves, laminar flow hoods, biosafety cabinets, incubators and various microscopes; drive a vehicle to conduct work.

Attend and participate in a variety of meetings and special projects as assigned.

OTHER DUTIES:
Perform related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Any combination equivalent to: bachelors degree with course work in science, chemistry, biology, physics or a related field and two years laboratory experience.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Valid California drivers license.
