CINT Scientist - Soft Matter Nanoscience (Experienced)

The Soft, Biological, and Nanocomposite Materials (SBCN) Thrust in the Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies (CINT) is seeking an experimental research scientist with expertise in soft matter nanoscience. Areas of specific interest include synthesis and characterization of synthetic and/or biological polymers, soft matter chemistry and self-assembly, and soft materials fabrication/lithography. This scientist in this position will serve a critical role in the CINT user program, which is jointly operated by Sandia and Los Alamos National Laboratories for the Department of Energy’s Office of Science. SNL Job Title: R&D Materials Science

Key functions of this role include, but are not limited to:

• Conduct world-leading original research and support user projects in the areas of soft matter and nanoscience integration
• Lead a growing collaborative experimental research program in basic and user-inspired research that exploits current and future CINT capabilities and strategic directions
• Conduct research that will garner national/international peer recognition, lead to highly cited publications in major journals, create new intellectual property, and have impact in important science and technology programs to seek critical challenges in energy and national security
• Work with the growing community of CINT users who seek your expertise to advance their research and lead to impactful publications
• Engage in stimulating collaborations, develop new research programs that taps into expertise at Sandia and Los Alamos National Laboratories, and lead in the development of nanoscience integration capabilities
• Lead a small team of technicians and postdocs, to include development of team members through training, mentorship towards substantial research contributions, and scientific publications

The Nanosystems Synthesis/Analysis department (01882) is one of two departments at Sandia that are a part of The Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies (CINT). CINT is a Department of Energy/Office of Science Nanoscale Science Research Center operating as a national user facility dedicated to establishing the scientific principles that govern the design, performance, and integration of nanoscale materials. Through its core facility in Albuquerque and gateway facility at Los Alamos, CINT provides users from academia, industry, and government labs, open access to the tools and expertise needed to explore the continuum from scientific discovery to the integration of nanostructures into the micro- and macro world. Required:

• PhD in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Bioengineering, or a related discipline plus a bachelor's in science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM)
• Ongoing scientific research and creative leadership in soft materials science, or related fields
• Experience working in a related nanoscience area
• Good communication skills as evidenced by a history of publication of results in peer-reviewed journals and external presentations at appropriate scientific conferences
• Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE security clearance

Desired:

• Involvement with research teams on complex multicomponent projects
• Experience encouraging scientific collaborations with a diverse population of visiting researchers including students, post-doctoral scientists, and research peers from academic, industrial and other research institutions
• Experience with the synthesis and characterization of synthetic and/or biological polymers, soft matter chemistry and self-assembly, and soft materials fabrication/lithography.
• National reputation as evidenced by multiple concurrent, interdisciplinary collaborations and involvement in scientific-society activities
• Experience with program development and grants preparation with intra- and extramural funding agencies

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications.
