Research Assistant II
Maintains and operates a state-of-the-art multiphoton microscope platform consisting of 3 Titanium-Sapphire lasers and 2 optical parametric oscillators and one Leica SP8 STED confocal microscope with 1 white-light and 1 UV diode lasers coupled with multi-wavelength depletion lasers and 1 optical light with polarization prism; supports biologists with design and applications for novel hardware devices (e.g. objectives; tools for tissue fixation, sample and slide preparation, fixing, staining and live tissue imaging ; supports other types of microscopy (robotic and/or high-content microscopes, including macro programming. The knowledge in the following procedures is required:
· Expertise with optical microscopy, e.g. confocal/two-photon microscopy or applied laser techniques. Experience in STED microscopy is preferred.
· Basic knowledge of fluorescence microscopy and related technologies such as FRET, FRAP, etc.
· Basic knowledge on software and macro programming (e.g. ImageJ, Matlab) for image processing
· Optional: knowledge on CAD design of hardware, basic knowledge of cancer cell biology
Communicate information:
· Must be able to communicate results to and understand instructions from the supervisor and principal investigators.
· Clear and accurate communication in English both face-to-face and over the telephone is required.
· A willingness to cooperate with other staff, students, fellows and visitors is essential.
· Ability to compose short paragraphs describing the technology for grants and publications.
Provides support for basic experiments using imaging of tissue culture and small animals:
· Assists researchers for maintenance of animals during narcosis and microscopic imaging; acquires data from tissue cultures independently; provides assistance for image acquisition and analysis
· Supports researchers in the use of available software for image processing segmentation and quantitation
Computer literacy (other than above):
Needs to be capable of generating electronic versions of data and images for analysis and presentation.
Optional: Experience in cloud-based image and data management
Training of microscopy users:
Must be able to acquire and teach new microscopy techniques to scientists and students and support research teams in setting up new microscopy techniques
Laboratory Inventory management:
Must be able to manage inventories and order material for the laboratory in a timely fashion. Must work with department members and collaborators to ensure the consistent flow of information and quality control.
Education Required: Bachelor's Degree with major course works in one of the basic sciences.
Experience Required: Two years experience in scientific or experimental research work. No experience required with preferred degree.
