About the Department

Clemson University's Department of Genetics and Biochemistry, located in the College of Science, is home to over 30 full-time
faculty who are focused on advancing the University's research mission and providing strong educational programs at both the

complex traits, population genetics, genomics, bioinformatics, and protein structure and function in cells, humans, canines,
plants, Drosophila, and pathogenic fungi and parasites. Many of the Genetics and Biochemistry faculty are members of
Clemson's Center for Human Genetics and the Eukaryotic Pathogens Innovation Center, an NIH Center of Biomedical Research
Excellence. Annual research expenditures for Genetics and Biochemistry are approximately $3.8M. Faculty in Genetics and
Biochemistry have 21st century labs in the Biosystems Research Complex and the Life Sciences Facility on the Clemson main
campus, and Self Regional Hall on the Greenwood Genetic Partnership Campus. Faculty research is supported by the Palmetto
High Performance Computing Cluster, the Clemson Light Imaging Facility, and the Clemson University Genomics and
Bioinformatics Facility, which provides access to next generation sequencing instrumentation including an Illumina NextSeq
550, NovaSeq 6000, and PacBio Sequel II, as well as customized bioinformatics analyses.

The Department, which offers B.S. and Ph.D. degrees in both Genetics and Biochemistry, has grown rapidly in recent years and
currently enrolls more than 35 doctoral students and nearly 600 undergraduate students. The Department offers ~10,000
student credit hours annually and has an operating budget of $3.5M.
