Basic Purpose

The X-ray Science Division of the Advanced Photon Source (APS) at Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) is offering a Postdoctoral position to conduct research on X-ray cavities for cavity-based  X-ray free-electron lasers  (XFELs), future fully coherent hard x-ray sources of extreme spectral brightness.  The work of the successful candidate will be focused on development, characterization and tests of X-ray-cavity optical components, X-ray-cavity detectors and  monitors, cavity alignment procedures, appropriate software tools and eventually on cavity tests. The R&D will be performed in a framework of a joint ANL-SLAC (SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory) project.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Considerable:  The successful candidate should have a Ph.D. in physics with solid knowledge in the following areas: optics (X-ray optics including), photon detectors, X-ray techniques. Considerable skills in experimental physics and experience of working with complex optical systems are required to develop, test, and characterize novel x-ray optics, and detectors.  Competence in using complex software and ability to develop new software tools is essential.

Good:  Successful candidate should have an experience of working at synchrotron  radiation or XFEL  facilities.  Should be able to understand abstract physical concepts and the ability to synthesize experimental results into a proper theoretical framework. Good written and oral communication skills for writing scientific papers and presenting research results at scientific meetings are important.

Other:  Knowledge of Linux operating system, LaTeX document preparation system, GLE or other advanced graphical tools, Python or other programming languages is desired.
