The Developmental Therapeutics Core (DTC) of Northwestern University has an immediate opening for Assistant Director to lead and grow the day-to-day operations of this highly productive, in-demand resource.

The DTC is a core facility within the Chemistry of Life Processes Institute (CLP). CLP at Northwestern University is where new cures and biomedical discoveries begin. From involvement in landmark Alzheimer’s studies to revolutionary new treatments for cancer, Parkinson’s, cardiovascular disease and addiction, DTC plays a critical role in advanced biomedical research and translation of new therapeutics, diagnostics and devices. The core services currently include a full suite of fee-for-service support services, including: in vitro and in vivo assessment of drug activity and mechanism of action, exploratory drug development activities such as pharmacokinetics and toxicology, consultation and project management and clinical trial support in a fast-paced environment.

Job responsibilities include:

  • Communicate and collaborate with principle investigators and their students and postdocs to develop study parameters.
  • In coordination with the faculty director and faculty advisory board, develop a robust strategic plan for the facility.
  • Hire, train and supervise DTC technical staff.  Provide mentoring and career coaching.
  • Write and manage blanket IACUC protocols and oversee staff compliance with all animal and human safety protocols.
  • Work with the Northwestern IACUC and Center for Comparative Medicine to ensure that animal care and handling meets the highest possible standards.
  • Design and execute in vivo and in vitro studies that align with all standards for rigor and reproducibility.
  • Perform data analyses and preparation of final study reports.
  • Ensure that data records and analyses meet the highest standards for transparency and reproducibility.
  • Oversee customer billing by the CLP business office and recharge services
  • Develop the core annual report, cost study, and budget
  • Oversee marketing DTC services to Northwestern and external users, in collaboration with the CLP associate director for marketing.
  • Create SOPs and ensure that these SOPs are accurately reflected in executed studies/projects

Minimum Qualification:

PhD in the biological sciences or pharmacology and 8 years practical lab/bench experiences.

Minimum Competencies:

  1. Cell culture, animal handling, microscopic analysis, aseptic method.
  2. Euthanasia and harvesting/collection of organs of mice with completion within reasonable time frame
  3. Animal treatment methods: IP, SC, IV injections.
  4. Data recording, tracking and analysis.
  5. IACUC protocol creation and execution.
  6. Project management experience in either industry or academics.
  7. Management and training of personnel.
  8. Strong oral and written skills.

Preferred Competencies:

  1. 3 or more years of management and leadership experience
  2. Imaging modalities (LM, EM, IVIS, optical), aseptic method, proliferation assay, western blots
  3. Experience in creating basic in-vivo protocols
  4. Writing scientific reports for users/clients
  5. Experience in developing a preclinical specific aim for research grants
  6. Self-motivated, well-organized, willing to work in a fast pace lab environment
  7. Experience in managing core facility or experience in biotech or pharma in preclinical testing.
  8. Experience in academic environment.
  9. Record of exemplary rigor and reproducibility in experimental design, execution and data analysis.
