PROFESSORSHIP (W3) FOR HIGH-FIELD NMR-SPECTROSCOPY

The Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Natural Sciences invites applications for a

PROFESSORSHIP (W3) FOR HIGH-FIELD NMR-SPECTROSCOPY

commencing on 1 October 2020, ref. no. 2316/W3.

Responsibilities:

We are seeking candidates recognized internationally for their work in the field of NMR spectroscopy. The successful candidate is required to have expertise in high-field NMR spectroscopy and the investigation of complex structures in solution. The professorship has been assigned to the core research area Infection Research in the Department of Chemistry. Thus, experience studying relevant bio-structures and their small-molecule interactions is desirable.

We further expect the successful candidate to actively participate in current research alliances and seek intensive cooperation with the other research groups in the Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Natural Sciences. Moreover, the professorship should form a bridge between Department of Chemistry, the Hamburg Advanced Center for Bioorganic Chemistry (HARBOR, AIM—currently under development), and the Centre for Structural Systems Biology (CSSB). Close interaction with the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf and external Hamburg institutions (Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine, The Heinrich Pette Institute Leibniz Institute for Experimental Virology (HPI)) is also desirable.

In their application, applicants are expected to indicate to which of the University’s core re-search areas, emerging fields, or profile initiatives (https://www.uni-hamburg.de/en/forschung/forschungsprofil/forschungsschwerpunkte.html) their research can best be assigned. Duties then include participation in one or more of the core research areas, emerging fields, or profile initiatives.

The successful candidate is expected to actively participate in the instruction of students in the Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Chemistry (lectures, seminars, internships) and to teach organic chemistry.

In addition to research and teaching, the professorship oversees the Department’s service center for NMR spectroscopy, which currently has nine spectrometers and four technical assistants.

Section 12 subsection 7 sentence 2 of the Hamburg higher education act (Hamburgisches Hochschulgesetz, HmbHG) applies.

Requirements:

Academic qualifications and additional requirements as specified in Section 15 HmbHG.

Additional Criteria:

Applicants are expected to have international research experience as well as a successful track record in acquiring external funding and carrying out externally funded projects. The University places particular emphasis on the quality of teaching and therefore requests that applicants provide details of their teaching experience and objectives.

Following hearings, selected candidates will be assessed to ascertain skills in the areas of management and human resources.
