Dual Appointment Faculty Position
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
Cambridge, MA

The Department of Materials Science and Engineering (DMSE) and the Institute for Data, Systems, and Society (IDSS) seek candidates for a tenure track faculty position to begin July 1, 2020 or on a mutually agreed date thereafter. Faculty duties include teaching at the graduate and undergraduate levels, research, and supervision of student research in IDSS and DMSE. Appointments will be at the assistant or untenured associate professor level. In special cases, a senior faculty appointment will be considered. We seek candidates with proven excellence in research who have the vision and interest to contribute to interdisciplinary research in machine learning, data science, and statistics as applied to problems in materials science and engineering. Examples include applications of extreme value theory or robust statistics to microscopic physics in materials or use of novel machine learning techniques for new material discovery, incorporation of new functionality, and material property prediction. Candidates should hold a Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering, Statistics, or a related field by the start date of employment.

MIT has recently introduced the Schwarzman College of Computing. Successful candidates would hold joint appointments in IDSS (which is in the new College) and in DMSE. Interested candidates should submit application materials electronically at http://school-of-engineering-faculty-search.mit.edu/dmse-idss/register. Each application should include: a curriculum vitae, statement of research interests and statement of teaching interests. Each candidate should include the names and contact information of three candidates for reference letters. Questions should be addressed to idss-dmse-search@mit.edu. Applications will be evaluated as they are received, with fullest consideration given to those received by November 30, 2019.

We especially encourage minorities and women to apply because of MIT’s strong commitment to diversity in engineering education, research and practice.

MIT is an equal-opportunity/affirmative action employer. Women and underrepresented minorities are especially encouraged to apply.
