The Department of Natural Sciences at the University of Alaska Southeast in Juneau is seeking a qualified applicant for a tenure-track position in Microbiology to begin August, 2020.  This position will support undergraduate Bachelor of Science programs in Biology, Marine Biology, and Environmental Science through teaching, research and service. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Microbiology, Biology, Environmental Science or a related field. The successful applicant will be responsible for teaching lower division and upper division courses including: Microbiology, a service course for the Nursing program, Forest Ecosystem-related courses for Biology and Environmental Sciences, and upper division courses and seminars in their area of expertise.

Duties:

Support the UAS undergraduate Bachelor of Science programs in Biology, Marine Biology, and Environmental Science through teaching, research and service. Establish an externally funded research program that involves undergraduates. Provide local field and/or lab research and educational opportunities for our undergraduates. Serve as a member of the interdisciplinary EPSCoR Fire and Ice research team. Responsible for teaching lower division and upper division courses including: Microbiology, a service course for the Nursing program, Forest Ecosystem-related courses for Biology and Environmental Sciences, and upper division courses and seminars in their area of expertise.

Faculty at UAS are expected to establish an externally funded research program that involves undergraduates. Preference will be given to applicants with expertise in microbiology whose research has the potential to span from forest to marine ecosystems. The successful applicant will provide local field and/or lab research and educational opportunities for our undergraduates. This position is supported by the Alaska Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) Program. During the first three years at UAS, the successful applicant will serve as a member of the interdisciplinary EPSCoR Fire and Ice research team, which is examining the impacts of climate change on: 1) fire occurrence and distribution, and 2) freshwater and biogeochemical fluxes into the nearshore environment across a gradient of watershed types, from glacial- to rain- fed. This is a 9-month, tenure-track faculty appointment complete with a competitive salary and excellent package of benefits, including negotiable relocation funds.
