Job title

Career Researchers (tenure track) in Biomedical Sciences

Place of work

The place of work is located at the ICVS | Life and Health Sciences Research Institute, School of Medicine (EM), University of Minho (UMinho), Campus of Gualtar, Braga, Portugal.

The Life and Health Sciences Research Institute (ICVS)

The Life and Health Sciences Research Institute (ICVS), member of the ICVS/3B’s Portuguese Associate Laboratory, was created in 2003 and aims at improving human health through outstanding biomedical research, cutting-edge medical innovation and delivery of specialized services.

The ICVS is incorporated in the School of Medicine of the University of Minho, strategically located in the Northern region of Portugal within a fast growing Cluster of Biomedical Science, Technology and Healthcare institutions. The ICVS is associated with the Clinical Academic Centre-Braga (2CA-Braga), a clinical research site located at the Braga Hospital (serving a population of 1.3M people), that currently runs 1/3 of all clinical trials in Portugal.

The ICVS is organized around four interdisciplinary Research Domains: Microbiology and Infection, Neurosciences, Surgical Sciences and Population Health. Being a relatively young institution, the ICVS quickly strived in the Portuguese science ecosystem by having a strong commitment on promoting innovation and a strategy for recruiting promising investigators. Scientists at the ICVS benefit from a young, stimulating, competitive and striving research atmosphere. Our aim is to create science leaders that work together under a collaborative spirit.

Therefore, within the ICVS, all laboratory wet space is housed together in expansive open space, fostering a collaborative spirit, inter-group interactions and sharing of common lab equipment and access to shared central facilities. Other relevant aspect is the fact that ICVS and the School of Medicine presently run 3 PhD programs and one MSc program, thus enabling PIs with a solid recruitment basis for post-graduation students.

The offer to applicants

The ICVS offers a start-up package, including start-up funds and lab space, in addition to general support provided by the ICVS laboratorial core facilities and administrative offices:

- Start-up funds typically cover general basic reagents (salts, agar, media, sucrose, etc) and plasticware (pipette tips, conical centrifuge tubes, petri dishes, microcentrifuge tubes, etc).

- Technical support is provided by staff allocated to scientific core facilities, warehouse and animal facility, in addition to administrative support (grants office, project management, IT support, communication and public engagement, safety and health).

- The ICVS also provides common lab equipment, including fully equipped cell culture facilities, experimental surgery facilities, electrophysiology facilities, chemical labs, chromatography, flow cytometers, confocal, fluorescence and microdissection microscopes, cryostat, a multiplex analyzer, RT-PCR and a variety of small shared equipment for routine wet lab research (precision scales, centrifuges, pH meters, etc).

- ICVS also offers dedicated staff at its animal facilities and core facilities of microscopy, histology and molecular biology.
