Duties:  Research and teaching in plant and/or microbial ecology

The Department of Plant and Microbial Biology (PMB) at North Carolina State University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in the areas of Plant and/or Microbial Ecology. Scale of research may include ecosystems, communities, or populations, with areas of emphasis that may include, but are not limited to, environmental plant-microbe interactions, wetland ecology, global change biology, conservation biology and ethnoecology. Priority will be given to candidates whose research involves an interdisciplinary approach that includes field work combined with laboratory and/or quantitative tools. The successful candidate will be expected to develop a productive, extramurally funded research program that enhances and complements existing programs in the department and college.

PMB is a diverse and growing department with strengths in ecology, evolution, physiology, molecular biology, and microbiomes, and is home to a herbarium of 130,000 specimens representing the southeastern US flora. NCSU offers opportunities for collaboration with ecologists in the Departments of Applied Ecology; Forestry and Environmental Science; Marine, Earth, and Atmospheric Sciences; Entomology and Plant Pathology; Crop and Soil Sciences; Statistics; and Biological Sciences. PMB participates in the Southeast Climate Adaptation Science Center, the Plant Soil Microbial Community Consortium, the Chancellor’s Excellence Cluster on Microbiomes and Complex Microbial Communities, the Center for Integrated Fungal Research, the Plant Sciences Initiative, and the Genetics and Genomics Initiative. NCSU has a state-of-the-art marine laboratory (CMAST) in Morehead City (150 miles from campus), and a network of outstanding field stations from the mountains to the coast, including two near campus.

Responsibilities will be divided between research and teaching, with a teaching expectation of 1-2 courses per year. Teaching topic will depend on the individual’s areas of expertise, and may include general undergraduate ecology. Candidates will be expected to mentor graduate and undergraduate students in research.

Candidates must have a PhD degree in plant or microbial biology or related discipline, with expertise in plant and/or microbial ecology and a record of peer-reviewed publications and scholarly accomplishments commensurate with experience.
