Old Dominion University (ODU) invites nominations and applications for the position of Dean, Batten College of Engineering and Technology.  ODU is located in the coastal City of Norfolk, Virginia. It is a dynamic, minority serving, public research institution that provides educational opportunities for 24,000+ students through traditional and online undergraduate and graduate academic programs, strategic partnerships, and active civic engagement.  Located between Washington DC and Raleigh NC, the Norfolk region is home to numerous local offices of federal government agencies/departments and private industries, many of which actively partner with ODU. The Frank Batten College of Engineering and Technology seeks a collaborative leader to serve as its next dean; someone who will grow student enrollment/retention and build an innovative research portfolio through partnerships with federal/state government agencies/departments and with industry that is aimed at enhancing workforce readiness for ODU’s engineering students and advancing the institution’s research agenda.  The college is one of six colleges at the University, and includes 111 tenured/tenure-track faculty, 2,400+ full-time undergraduates, and 772 graduate students in six departments and Naval ROTC: Civil & Environmental Engineering; Electrical & Computer Engineering; Engineering Management & Systems Engineering; Engineering Technology; Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering; and Computational Modeling and Simulation Engineering.

Responsibilities: As the chief academic officer for the college, the dean will provide strategic and operational leadership for all aspects of the academic and scholarly programs.  In collaboration with the faculty and chairs, the dean will establish and implement a realistic strategic vision for the college that will enhance undergraduate and graduate education and strengthen the college’s research portfolio by leveraging the numerous place-based opportunities for federal/state and industry partnerships. He/She will also be responsible for facilitating faculty, staff, and student success, generating extramural financial support, engaging with college alumni and the local community, and leading the college to higher levels of achievement, recognition, and reputation.

The successful candidate will be an accomplished engineering scholar, and a visionary, collaborative leader with experience in strategic planning.  He/She will be an effective communicator with a strong commitment to diversity and to fiscal responsibility, who is able to inspire faculty, staff, and students with a sense of pride and purpose for the college’s vision and mission. 

Qualifications: Candidates must have an earned doctorate with a record of distinguished research/teaching and professional accomplishments that merits faculty appointment as professor with tenure. He/She must have a significant record of success as a well-respected administrator within a complex organization.

Compensation/Expected Start Date: Compensation is competitive and based upon qualifications and experience.  Starting date is July 1, 2020.
