Assistant Professor

The Johns Hopkins Institute for Cell Engineering at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine seeks applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor.

Research duties will include:

  • Performing cutting-edge experimental research in the areas of molecular biology and protein biochemistry in order to make unique scientific contributions to the field and discover biological processes that will push science forward.
  • Employing cell biology, molecular biology, and protein biochemistry techniques to conduct animal and cell culture experiments to investigate the molecular mechanisms of cell death in Parkinson’s disease and related disorders.
  • Drawing on expertise in designing and establishing cell-based functional screening systems to set up a novel functional screening system to identify new drugs for Parkinson’s disease.
  • Performing experimental techniques, such as propidium iodide cell death assays, promoter assays using reporter genes, ELISA assays, recombinant protein purification, in vitro and in vivo pull down assays, western blots, immunofluorescence assays, and mouse behavioral tests (including novel object recognition, grip strength, open field and pole tests, and stereological injections into mouse brains).
  • Exploring mechanisms by which dopamine neurons degenerate in Parkinson’s disease, stroke, and other neurologic disorders (Alzheimer’s disease, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, etc.).
  • Building on the existing strength of the Institute for Cell Engineering faculty while building an independent research portfolio.
  • Documenting important findings and publishing in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
  • Applying for external research funding and writing successful grants.

Teaching duties will include:

  • Providing instruction and training in the areas of molecular biology and protein biochemistry to medical students, residents, fellows, and graduate students.
  • Teaching molecular biology and protein biochemistry research skills to undergraduate students and summer interns.
  • Teaching undergraduate and graduate level courses in molecular biology.
  • Serving as an academic advisor to graduate students and as a mentor to postdoctoral fellows.
  • Serving on graduate student committees and other academic committees.
  • Performing other related duties as assigned.

Position requires a doctorate degree (or foreign equivalent) in Biology, Biological Sciences, Molecular and Cell Biology, or a closely related field.  Faculty members achieving the rank of Assistant Professor are expected to have demonstrated clear evidence of creative scholarship in the area of their primary expertise. All faculty members are required to achieve excellence in teaching.

Interested individuals should submit a letter of interest and CV to the attention of Ted Dawson, M.D., Ph.D. at: neuro@jhmi.edu.

The Johns Hopkins University is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer committed to recruiting, supporting, and fostering a diverse community of outstanding faculty, staff and students.  All applicants who share this goal are encouraged to apply.
