Chief Scientific Officer & Vice President, Sector Development

Genome British Columbia (Genome BC) leads genomics research and innovation on Canada’s West Coast and facilitates the integration of genomics into society. A recognized catalyst for government and industry, Genome BC invests in responsible research, innovation, entrepreneurship and commercialization in life sciences to address challenges in key sectors such as health, forestry, fisheries, aquaculture, agrifood, energy, mining and environment. Genome BC partners with many national and international public and private funding organizations to drive BC's bioeconomy, and is committed to fostering an understanding and appreciation of the life sciences among educators, students and the public.

The Chief Scientific Officer & Vice President, Sector Development (the CSO & VP) is responsible for developing, aligning with the corporate strategy, and keeping current Genome BC’s strategies in each of the chosen economic sectors in British Columbia by working with industry, academia and government. They look for opportunities to support Genome BC’s mandate in innovation, supporting the practical translation of ideas and research outcomes into new or improved products, services, processes, systems or social interactions. The CSO & VP also leads and manages a team of dedicated professionals who work with industry, government and academic partners to identify funding in order to develop new Genome BC Programs to meet the needs of sector users. The CSO & VP represents Genome BC at national ‘Genome Enterprise’ activities; is a scientific spokesperson for Genome BC across the sectors and at regional, national and select international conferences and forums; connects with leaders and researchers in other transformative fields; and is a member of the Genome BC executive team.

The ideal candidate is a recognized scientific leader and influencer with a track record in understanding strategic connections to leverage research opportunities that can be translated into innovation or commercialization opportunities. A big picture thinker, they can distill a vision down into practical applications and support a team in fulfilling that vision. The CSO & VP brings a strong national and international network of scientific and industry contacts to Genome BC and has a track record of developing successful science and research partnerships within broad transformational science contexts. A confident communicator, the CSO & VP is comfortable and skilled at presenting to a wide range of audiences, from the media to large conference audiences and individual researchers alike. In addition, they are a skilled leader who has experience leading and managing professional teams, providing coaching, support and development opportunities that will enable the organization to thrive. The CSO & VP possesses a PhD ideally in the omics or other transformative life sciences field, with experience providing research guidance and oversight. Industry experience is preferred.
