Summary: The Department of Biology invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor specializing in microbiology to join the faculty beginning August 16, 2020.  All areas of specialization in biomedical microbiology will be considered.  

Duties and Responsibilities: The candidate will be expected to develop a nationally competitive, extramurally funded research program that involves Ph.D., M.S., and undergraduate students. Teaching expectations include a junior/senior-level lecture and laboratory course in Microbiology and a second course in consultation with the chair of the department. The faculty hire will be expected to mentor graduate and undergraduate students and serve as an academic advisor to biology and pre-medicine majors. In addition, the faculty hire will be expected to participate in the departments outside speaker program, a graduate special topics journal club course, and to supervise an occasional undergraduate seminar course.

Required Qualifications:

- A Ph.D. or international equivalent degree in Microbiology, Biology or a related biomedical discipline

- Relevant post-doctoral experience

- Articulated commitment to inclusive excellence in teaching at the undergraduate and graduate level

- Demonstrated record of excellence in biomedical microbiological research

Preferred Qualifications: While everyone may not possess all of the preferred qualifications, the ideal candidate will bring many of the following qualifications:

- Excellent record of peer-reviewed scientific publications in the area of microbiology

- Demonstrated experience mentoring undergraduate and graduate student research

- Demonstrated record of research grant applications to federal agencies

- Demonstration of a research program including microbiological aims

- Ability and/or articulated interest in teaching an undergraduate course in Immunology.

- Articulated interest in contributing to curriculum development and teaching students from diverse backgrounds.

- Demonstrated capacity for effective interpersonal communication.

- Demonstrated ability to contribute to a positive, collegial, work atmosphere

- Demonstrated ability to support the University of Dayton’s commitment to the principles of diversity, inclusion and affirmative action and to equal opportunity policies and practices.
