Chairperson and Professor, Biological Sciences

Summary

Florida Atlantic University seeks a highly qualified candidate for the position of Chair of the Department of Biological Sciences.  The Chair is expected to have a Ph.D. in an area of Biology consistent with the Department’s current tracks in organismal biology, environmental science, neuroscience, cell biology and marine science.  In addition, the Chair should have a distinguished record of teaching, research, and service, and a record of significant prior leadership experience. Special consideration will be given to candidates with an active, externally-funded, and broadly integrative research program.  The Chair should possess qualities that will enable them to provide leadership and vision to a diverse faculty across three campuses.  Appointment is expected be made at the level of Full Professor.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of Biological Sciences is made up of 30 faculty members, three research scientists, four instructors, approximately 135 graduate students and nearly 3,000 undergraduate majors. The Department is home to the largest undergraduate major at FAU and strongly supports undergraduate research through a Biology Honors Program, directed independent research within the Department, and collaboration with FAU’s Office of Undergraduate Research and Inquiry (http://www.fau.edu/ouri/).

External collaborations include a joint graduate program with the Max Planck Florida Institute for Neuroscience and faculty also collaborate with the Scripps Research Institute-Florida, with researchers and affiliate faculty at FAU’s Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute in Fort Pierce (https://www.fau.edu/hboi/) and with the USGS on Everglades and climate change issues in coordination with FAU’s Center for Environmental Studies (http://www.ces.fau.edu). DUTIES

The position is a 12-month, tenure-track appointment with overall responsibilities including:

serving as an advocate by communicating faculty sentiment and championing departmental needs to internal and external constituents;

overseeing departmental organization and administration across our campuses, including curricular and fiscal management;

supervising and evaluating faculty and staff;

participating in research, scholarship, teaching, and service.

Minimum Qualification: 

Ph.D. from an accredited institution in an area of Biology consistent with the Department’s current tracks in organismal biology, environmental science, neuroscience, cell biology and marine science required.
