Department of Integrative Biology

Physiology Systems Biology [Job Posting #17350]

The Department of Integrative Biology at the University of Colorado Denver is seeking to hire a tenure-track faculty member in Physiology at the rank of Assistant Professor. The Department seeks a colleague who studies broadly defined physiological systems and processes at multiple levels of biological organization, using cutting-edge, contemporary approaches. Ideal candidates are those with active research programs and innovative approaches to research problems, experience with obtaining funding, and experience teaching. Preference will be given to candidates who have a demonstrated commitment to inclusion and equity of under-represented individuals in STEM, as we believe these traits strengthen our academic community.

About the University:

Located in downtown Denver, The University of Colorado Denver is Colorado’s only public urban research university. Our close connection with the nearby Anschutz Medical Campus offers access to state-of-the-art core facilities and cutting-edge medical research. CU Denver serves 15,000 students, and offers more than 100 degree programs across 8 schools and colleges.

The Biology Major is the largest undergraduate program in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, serving approximately 2,000 undergraduates and emphasizing basic knowledge in biology ranging from cell and molecular biology to ecology and evolution, as well as the development of skill sets in the scientific method, critical thinking, and technical writing. Our PhD and Master’s programs in Integrative and Systems Biology encourage multi-disciplinary faculty participation from across the CU Denver Campus, Denver Botanic Gardens, Denver Museum of Nature and Science, and the Anschutz Medical Campus.

Competitive applicants will contribute to the CU Denver and the Department of Integrative Biology mission to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in STEM education. Our student body of 15,000 is diverse: for our undergraduates, 52% percent are women, 44% are students of color, and 51% of freshmen are 1st generation students. CU Denver is also listed on G.I. Jobs “Military Friendly Schools” list. CU Denver is a member of The National Science Foundation’s Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation, and a recipient of a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Inclusive Excellence Grant for enhancing equity in STEM education. Diversity and inclusion are embedded in all aspects of campus life, described further at: http://www.ucdenver.edu/about/departments/odi/diversitymatters.

Job responsibilities

The successful candidate will establish an independent, externally funded research program involving our students in the area of physiology. The Department is particularly interested in candidates whose research programs utilize contemporary cellular and molecular approaches in their research program, and who are open to collaboration with existing faculty. Ideally, teaching responsibilities will support undergraduates in pre-Allied Health career fields (e.g., Physiology, Anatomy, Immunology, Cell Biology), as well as upper division or graduate level courses in the candidate’s area of expertise. The successful candidate is also expected to mentor undergraduate and graduate students.

Required qualifications:

A Ph.D. in the biological sciences or related field and a strong publication record are required. We encourage scientists with a broad range of physiology-related research questions and systems to apply. Model systems such as mice (BSL-1), frogs, worms, flies, yeast, or cultured cells would be appropriate, and ideally should complement current faculty interests.

Preferred qualifications:

Postdoctoral research, experience applying to national funding agencies, and experience with mentoring students and teaching are highly desirable qualifications.

Applications are submitted electronically at www.cu.edu/cu-careers

Review of applications will begin on 15 December 2019, and will continue until the position is filled.
